Death: 5 Nov 1869

Burial: Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, OH

Charles C. Wheelock

Birth: calculated 3 Mar 1846, Londonderry, Windham Co, VT

Death: 20 Oct 1889, Fitzwilliam Cheshire Co, VT

Father: Oliver King Wheelock
Mother: Elizabeth W. Howard

Spouse: Emma Rose Hubbard
Marriage: 18 Nov 1869, Manchester, Hillsborough Co, NH

  1. Florence Alinda Wheelock, born 9 Apr 1870, Boston, Suffolk Co, MA
  2. Charles Carroll Wheelock, born 26 Jun 1874, Boston, Suffolk Co, MA

Notes:

In 1850 he was living with his parents and uncle (Henry S. Wheelock) in Weymouth, Norfolk Co, MA. In 1860 he was living Boston, Ward 4, with his father and siblings. His mother had died a few years earlier in Weymouth.

During the Civil War, Charles C. Wheelock, age 18, resident of Boston, Clerk, enlisted and was mustered into the First Battery Massachusetts Volunteers Light Artillery on 8 Feb 1864. On 12 March 1865 he transferred from the First Battery to the Ninth Battery. He was mustered out 6 June 1865.1

Charles C. Wheelock is enumerated in the 1880 U.S. census living in Boston, Suffolk Co, MA, widowed or divorced, age 34, living with his sister in law, Hattie M. Wheelock, age 28, born Nova Scotia, keeping house, and his children Florence A. Wheelock, age 10, and Charles C. Wheelock, age 6.

The sister-in-law, Hattie M. Wheelock, could be Annie Marie (Turnbull) Wheelock, born circa 1851 in Nova Scotia, wife of Charles' brother, George Sidney Wheelock. But George was still alive in 1880, suggesting that they had divorced or that Hattie M. Wheelock is not Annie Marie (Turnbull) Wheelock.

Because his wife outlived him by many years, the 1880 census record for Charles C. Wheelock suggests that he had divorced Emma Rose Hubbard prior to 1880.

John Wheelock

Birth: about 1792, MA

Death: 11 Jun 1875, Bethany, Genesee Co, NY

Spouse: Nancy (--?--)
Marriage:

Notes:

This may be the John Wheelock who served as a private under Capt. Ebenezer Eggleston, in Churchills 164th NY (Genesee Co) Regiment in 1814.1

There are also records of a John Wheelock, born about 1774 in Charleston (Charlton?), MA, who enlisted Mar 1813 in Burlington, VT in Lt. Valentine R. Goodrich's company, 11th Vermont Regiment.2

A John Wheelock appears on an 1817 Holland Land Company Land Transaction, section 10, township 14, range 5, in Orleans Co (north of Batavia). But it appears that he never gained access to the land, as it was 'reverted' back to the Holland Land Company.

John Wheelock is enumerated in the 1820 Census living in Batavia, Genesee, NY, age between 26 and 44. In the same household is a female, of the same age. No children. He is living not far from Reu Wheelock and Eli Wheelock.

In 1830, he is enumerated again in Batavia, age between 30 and 39, with a female of the same age. No children.

He is in Batavia again in 1840, age between 40 and 49, with a female of the same age. He is only a few houses away from Jabez Howe, who married Relief Wheelock, sister to Reu Wheelock; and he's directly next to Albert Parker, who married Anna M. Wheelock. No children are listed for John Wheelock and his wife.

On 15 July 1841, John Wheelock published the following notice in the Batavia Republican Advocate: "Whereas, Nancy my wife, has eloped from my bed and board without any just cause or provocation, I hereby forbid all persons harboring or trusting her on my account, as I will not pay any debts of her contracting after this date. JOHN WHEELOCK, Batavia July 15, 1841."3

In 1850 he is again in Batavia, in the household of Sally Lusk, daughter of Relief Wheelock and Jabez Howe. Age 58. His wife is not listed. He is enumerated in the same household in 1860.

This is probably the J Wheelock in the 1870 Census, pauper, living in Bethany, Genesee Co, NY. Age 78, born in MA.

John Wheelock, aged 83, farm laborer, born in Massachusetts, married, died 11 June 1875 in Bethany, Genesee County, New York, of diarhia and old age.4

His proximity to Reu and Relief Wheelock, both children of Edward Wheelock and Martha Daggett suggest a close relationship to this family. It's entirely possible that he is a son of Edward and Martha. He would have been born just before Edward sold his property in Charlton to his brother John, and left for New York.
