There is no proof that Daniel is the son of Stephen Wheelock and Lucretia Newton, but he is presumed to be so based on the following arguments:
1) Stephen and Lucretia moved from Hubbardston, MA to Cheshire Co, NH between 1790 and 1800, according to the census and land records. Their sons Emery and Walter were married there. Their daughter Tabitha was probably married in Keene, Cheshire Co, NH.
2) The death record for Daniel indicates that he was born in Keene, Cheshire Co, NH, in 1794, which is where Stephen and Lucretia probably were at the time.
3) Other members of this family moved to Eden, VT. Walter and probably Martin moved there in the same time frame that Daniel first appears there (1810-1815) [see Note 1]. Tabitha's Keene marriage record refers to her as "from Eden, VT".
4) To confuse the issue, Daniel's death record indicates that he was the son of Walter and Lucretia. If it had referred to Stephen and Lucretia, there would be little question about his ancestry; but the reference to Walter is problematic. His brother, Walter, and his nephew, Walter, Jr., were prominent people in Eden, and it is entirely possible that the reference is in error, confusing his brother with his father.
5) Both Daniel and Walter Wheelock had close ties to the family of Jeduthan Stone, suggesting a close relationship between Daniel and Walter. In 1813, Daniel chose Jeduthan Stone in Eden, VT, as his guardian (Orleans County Probate Records, 1796-1843, Vol 1, pg 174). Jeduthan Stone lived in Hubbardston, MA then moved to Eden, VT, as did the Wheelock family. And it is likely the Stones and Wheelocks knew each other in Hubbardston, before moving to Eden. Jeduthan's daughter, Eliza Stone, married Walter Wheelock's son, Walter, Jr.
6) The onomastic evidence is strong. His first son was named Stephen, probably after his father. His daughter, Salley, may have been named after his sister. The name Daniel appears in the family, though several generations back.
7) Daniel's birth date fits well into the pattern of births for his mother.
Daniel is enumerated in the 1850 Census living in Waterville, VT, farmer, age 55, born in NH. Also in the household are Eunice Phelps, age 75, born in Mass, and Alice Wheelock, age 26, born in VT.
Notes
[1] The first record in Eden, VT, of Walter Wheelock is 1810, when he is enumerated in the Census. The first record of Daniel in Eden is in 1813, when Jeduthan Stone was appointed his guardian.
[2] The Vermont Vital Records show a marriage of Betsey Mellisa Wheelock of Eden, VT, to Jareb K. Richards, 9 Apr 1846. Betsey Mellisa Wheelock, born 25 Apr 1826 in Eden, apparently went by the name Mellisa, and is referenced in later records as Mellisa B. Wheelock. A descendant of Mellisa places her in this family, as does Marcus Warren Waite.
[3] Marcus Warren Waite also shows Betsey Wheelock and a Melissa Wheelock in this family, as two separate individuals. The latter is married to J. K. Richards. No birth, death, or marriage information is given about the former. The two are assumed to be the same individual here.
