"New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial", by Cutter, Lewis Historical Publishing Company, 1914, Pg 127, has the following to say about Martin:
"Martin was a dealer in horses, and for a number of years resided at Gardner, Worester County, MA, where he owned a small farm. In politics he was a Whig, and afterward a Republican."
Martin was thought to be the son of John Wheelock and Dorothy Wilder of Heath, MA, based partially on a birth date of 1782, as supposed by Cutter, and by onomastic evidence. However, the birth date of 9 Apr 1796, as given by "The Willis Family of Sudbury, MA", by McTeer and Warner, NEHGR, Vol 114, 1960, which is presumably on record in Leverett, MA, renders the theory implausible. Instead, he is presumed to be the son of John Wheelock and Sarah Willis, of Leverett.
This family is enumerated in the 1850 Census, living in Gardner, MA. Martin Wheelock, age 54, farmer, is living with Betsey Wheelock, age 55. Also in the household are Willis Wheelock, age 21, rattan splitter, and Samuel Wheelock, age 18, also rattan splitter.
Cutter mentions that Samuel, son of Martin and Betsey, resided in Springfield, MA, and worked for the Springfield Arms Company. Cutter does not mention Charles, who does appear in the VRs, son of Martin and Mehitabel.
Also, Cutter indicates that Dexter was the son of Martin and his second wife, Betsey ____, but the Conway VRs disagree, showing that Dexter was the child of Martin and his first wife, Mehitable. The Fitchburgh marriage record between Dexter and Olive refers to "Dexter, s. Martin and Mehitable".
Finally, Cutter shows Willis as the son of Martin and his first wife, but the Conway VRs disagree.
