Catharine Wheelock

Birth: about 1820, NY

Father: Phineas Wheelock
Mother: Elizabeth Hennesey

Spouse: Amos P. Delong
Marriage: 15 Dec 1836, Cuyahoga Co, OH

  1. Elbridge S. Delong, born about 1839, OH
  2. Mary G. Delong, born 11 Apr 1842, OH

Notes:

Catharine was probably born in Plattsburgh, Clinton Co, New York, where her parents were known to be living in 1820.1

She married A. P. Delong in Cuyahoga Co, Ohio on 15 Dec 1836. She was possibly living in Sharon Township, Medina Co, Ohio, in 1840, where A. P. Delong is listed in the U.S. census with 1 boy under 8, 1 man 20 to 30, 1 man 50 to 60, and 1 woman 20 to 30.

She was living in Copley, Summit Co, Ohio, in 1850, listed as Catharine Delong, age 30, born New York. Head of household was Amos P. Delong, age 31, tavern keeper, born New York. Others in the household were Elisa [sic, should probably be Elbridge] Delong, male, age 11, born Ohio, Mary G. Delong, female, age 8, born Ohio, Cromwell P. Delong [probably brother of Amos], age 28, laborer, born New York, Emily D. Delong, age 23, born New York, and Edward Prits?, age 50, born New York.

She has not been found in any records after the 1850 census. Her husband is probably the Amos Delong, age 41, teamster, born New York, living in 1860 in Akron, Summit Co, Ohio, with Letitia Delong, age 40, born Delaware, and Abert [Elbridge?] Delong, age 20, boatman, born Ohio. Amos P. Delong had applied for a license to marry Letitia D. Miller, in Cuyahoga Co, Ohio, on 26 Dec 1857, suggesting that Catharine died before that date.2

Amos P. Delong of Akron, Summit Co, Ohio, wrote his will on 14 Sep 1861. He did not mention a spouse. He left his entire estate to his son, Elbridge S. Delong, and appointed him executor.3 His will was filed with the probate office on 2 Mar 1862.

Research Notes:

Catharine (Wheelock) Delong is frequently confused with Mary (Wimer) Delong, who married Washington Delong in Allen Co, Indiana on 29 Apr 1847.4

But Catharine cannot be the same person as Mary (Wimer) Delong for the following reasons:

First, they are both enumerated in the 1850 census living in different places. Washington and Mary (Wimer) Delong are enumerated in the 1850 census living in Perry, Allen Co, Indiana in 1850, while Catharine and Amos P. Delong were living in Copley, Summit Co, Ohio.

It might be tempting to think that the Catharine living in Summit Co, Ohio, with Amos P. Delong is not Catharine Wheelock; but that isn't the case, because the death certificate of Catharine's daughter, Mary G. Delong (who was enumerated in the 1850 census in Catharine's household) lists Amos P. Delong and "Katherine Wheelock" as her parents (see notes for Mary G. Delong).

Second, Mary (Wimer) Delong died on 21 Jan 1862, aged 35 years 10 months 8 days. That implies a birth date of 13 March 1826; but that is almost two years after her mother, Elizabeth (Hennesey) Wheelock, died in Platsburgh, Clinton Co, New York, on 26 July 1824.5

Finally, the records on the Huntertown Historical Society website confirm that Mary (Wimer) Delong and Catharine (Wheelock) Delong are different people, with different burials in the Perry Township Cemetery, in Huntertown.6
