Charles went to Michigan to settle his uncle's estate, then established a permanent residence in Battle Creek. He is described in the local county history as "the up-to-date farmer, real estate man, roofing contractor, and energetic promoter of every movement for the social welfare and solid progress of this vicinity." (Source: "History of Calhoun County", by way of Jan Wheelock).

Dana was a partner of Leonard Nason in the mill operations at Nasonville. He probably is the Dany Wheelock at Burrillville in the 1840 Census, age 20-29, with a wife age 15-19, and two children, a son and a daughter under 5. Dana is enumerated in the 1850 Census, residing in Amherst, MA, occupation manufacturer. Mary Wheelock was listed as head of household at Amherst in the 1860 Census. Dana Wheelock and second wife, Mary, were living in the Second Ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1880, occupation real estate agent. Dana's death record gives his occupation as real estate broker. (Source: Doug Chase, July 2002)
