Otis Leonard Wheelock was an architect of note in Chicago, IL. His ancestry is not known for certain, but his mother is identified as Roxellana Wheelock by his christening record at the First United Presbyterian Congregation, Cambridge, Washington, New York. An old map of Watertown identifies his father as A. Wheelock. "History of Chicago", by Alfred Theodore Andreas, published by Arno Press, 1975, pg 565 identifies his parents as Amariah Wheelock and Roxanna Darby. This almost certainly is the Amariah Wheelock and Roccona Derby married 8 May 1808 in Townshend, VT. The dates fit, the names fit, and siblings of Amariah were known to move to other locales in New York. He married Minerva Meroa Mansfield in Sep 1850. They had two adopted children, Charlotte Mansfield Pettes (daughter of Minerva's sister: Ann Saphronia Mansfield and William Henry Pettes) and Harry B. Wheelock. He is enumerated in the 1850 Census, architect, age 33, living in Watertown, Jefferson Co, NY. In the same town is Leonard Wheelock, age 45, wagonmaker, born in Vermont, and Roxcy Wheelock, age 66, born in Vermont. The 1870 Census shows him living in Chicago with his wife, Minnie, and daughter, Charlotte. He is still in Chicago in 1880, living with his wife Minnie, and son Harry. Harry's wife was Irene Grosvenor Wheelock, a well know, published ornithologist.
A. Wheelock, age 65, "long-time resident", died in Watertown, NY, 19 Apr 1850, at the home of his son-in-law, Charles McGiven. (Src: 10,000 Vital Records of Central New York 1813-1850, Bowman, Fred Q., Baltimore, MD, USA: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1986; online database at www.Ancestry.com, Nov 2007). This was, no doubt, the father of Otis Leonard Wheelock - Amariah Wheelock, born 4 Oct 1784 in Mendon, MA, who married, Roccona Derby, 8 May 1808 in Townhsend, VT.
