Wheelock, born Dec 1830 in NY, is enumerated in the 1900 Census living in San Francisco with Lizzie Wheelock, born June 1847 in Wisconsin. The two had been married 29 years, according to the census. His occupation is listed as "Gem Collector", hers as "hairdresser". Also, lodging not far away is Samuel Wheelock, born June 1821 in NY, probably John's brother.

He earned an A.B. from Yale in 1765, then served for almost two years as preceptor in the Indian Charity Schools. His temper grew uncontrolled over time, as epilepsy began to take hold. In later years he was put under guardianship, and was subject to restraint.
His father's will provided him with lifetime support.
