Notes:

Asa Wheelock was a sergeant in the Revolutioary War, in Captain Jacob Davis' Company, Colonel Ebenezer Learned's Regiment. He marched from Charlton to Roxbury on the Lexington Alarm of April 19, 1775. He was also in Capt. Abijah Lamb's Company, Colonel Jonathan Holman's regiement, which marched to Providence on an alarm in December 1776.

After spending a summer or two in Calais clearing land and making preparations for settlement, he brought his family to Calais probably in the summer of 1789. Per Waite, he was believed to have settled on lot fourteen of the second division, though title is not shown in the Calais records. He was an officer of the town and it's organizations in 1795, and a selectman n 1796.¹

Read literally, this headstone implies that Mercy Wheelock was born 21 Dec 1737. However, this conflicts with the 14 Aug 1737 birth date of her brother, Eleazar Wheelock, which is substantiated by the Lebanon Vital Records, and his headstone. A more likely interpretation is that the headstone uses old style dates, and that her birth date was 21 Dec 1738, and she died 28 Feb 1738/39. This fits well within the pattern of births for her mother, Sarah (Davenport) Wheelock.
