The "Windows Help File Format" can be thought of as a genealogy book in electronic format. The "book" can be read by anybody using Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, or XP, Vista, or 7. No special genealogy software is required to read it. It is a very handy format for casual browsing of genealogy data, reading notes and biographies of individuals, and learning about relatives and relationships. No particular skill or knowledge of genealogy programs is required.
The Wheelock Genealogy Help files each have a title page, followed by a separate page for each individual in the genealogy. These pages show birth dates, death dates, sources, parents, children, and notes about that individual. Hypertext allows you to jump immediately to the page containing information about a spouse, parent, or child. There is an index of all individuals in the genealogy, as well as an index of placenames. In addition, there is a search capability that allows you to search for any word or combination of words in the "book". For example, searching for "Civil War" might yield a list of all individuals who fought in the Civil War, or who were somehow associated with the Civil War.
Like a book, the Wheelock Genealogy Help files allow you to create any number of bookmarks, and allow you to annotate the pages of the book with your own comments.
Unfortunately, Wheelock Genealogy Help files cannot be read on Macintosh Computers.
To install, simply download the self extracting archive into a folder on your computer, then double click the file (ralphhlp.exe). This will run the installer. You will be asked for a location on your computer to place the ralph.chm help file. We recommend your desktop (C:\Users\Your Name\Desktop).
If you download the zipped version, unzip it directly to the folder that you want. Again, the desktop is a convenient location.
Portable Document Format files are readable on both PCs and MACs, are easily printable, and are fairly easy to browse, though not as quick as help files. To read PDF files, you must install the Adobe Acrobat Reader. If it is not already installed on your system, download a free copy by clicking the button below.
Zip files are compressed using the popular WinZip utility. The shortens download time. However, to decompress the file, you will need WinZip, which can be obtained for free at www.winzip.com.
Self extracting archives are compressed using the popular WinZip utility (www.winzip.com). This shortens download time. However, you don't need winzip to extract the file. To extract, run the downloaded file, using the START->RUN taskbar menu (or click on it in file explorer).
