Wheelock Family Genealogy

Revision History

1 Jan 2012

Added the family of Amasa Wheelock (1793 - 1838) and Sophia Bensley (1797 - 1888), presenting evidence that Amasa is the son of Amasa Wheelock and Abigail Chase (of Townshend, VT), or at least closely related. For more details, see the notes for Amasa Wheelock (born 8 Apr 1768 in Mendon, MA). Added information about other members of the Wheelock family in Townshend, VT. Added information about the descendants of Charles Wheelock (1789 - 1868), who came to NY from Ireland around 1810. His connection to the Wheelock family in America has not yet been established.

15 May 2011

Added many updates to the "Descendants of Rev. Ralph Wheelock", including the genealogy of NASA astronaut Douglas Wheelock (see Biographies of Notable Wheelocks); information about the descendants of Esek Wheelock and Sophia Steere of Glocester, RI, and Tunkhannock, PA;  more information about the descendants of John Gleason Wheelock and Lavina Clark; and information supplied by Daniel Wheelock, a descendant, about Jonathan Wheelock (1806 - 1845), who married Sophia Hastings in Worcester, MA 27 Nov 1833, and later removed to Moline, IL. His ancestry is a mystery.

19 Feb 2011

Added an essay written by Kevin R. Wheelock, entitled "Was Hugh de Whelock a Norman from France?". In this well researched essay, Kevin Wheelock asserts that Hugh de Whelock, the most distant Wheelock ancestor known to date (and the first Wheelock associated with the village of Wheelock in Cheshire, England) was a Norman who brought his surname from France and bestowed it on the village that had previously been known as Hoiloch. This challenges the traditional view that Wheelock is an adaptation of Hoiloch, and originates from the Welsh word cheval-og (winding river). Furthermore, Kevin suggests that the surname Wheelock ultimately derives from a similar Norse surname Willoch. This is a provocative thesis, suggesting the need for more research into the surname history.

6 Feb 2011
