Notes:

He attended Worcester Academy high in Worcester, Massachusetts,¹ and later Brown, where he graduated in 1852. Immediately after graduation he was appointed Master of the Elm Street Grammar School of Providence. In March 1859 he moved to Boston and became Usher in the Dwight School. In 1867 he became master at the Rice School in Boston, where he remained for the rest of his career.²

During the Civil War he enlisted in Sep 1862 as a private in Company C, 43rd Regiment Mass. Militia. In Nov 1862 he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and transferred to Company A, 43rd Reg't. He was mustered out on 30 July 1863.³

Research Notes:

Middle name Augustus from his daughter's death certificate.⁵

He was a resident of Boston in 1847, when he attended Worcester Academy.¹

In 1850 he was 22, born Vermont, living in Boston with his parents.

In 1860 he was 30, born Massachusetts [sic], teacher, living in Boston, with his wife, Louise A. Wheelock, age 24, born New York, and his daughter Harriet S. Wheelock, age 2, born Rhode Island.

In 1870 he was 40, born Vermont, school teacher, living in Boston with Louisa A., age 32, born New York, Fanny G., age 9, born Mass., and Benjamine A., 2, born Mass.

Not found in the 1880 census. In 1900 Louisa A. Wheelock, age 65, widowed, was living in San Diego, California, in the household of her sisters, Harriet A. Arnold, and Lydia C. Buker.

Most records identify his birth place as Barre, Vermont, but there is no record of his parents living there. Lucius was born circa 1829; in 1830 his parents were living in Marshfield, Vermont, per census. There are two records that identify his place of birth as Marshfield, Vermont - his obituary in the Boston Journal², and the birth record of his daughter, Fannie Graham Wheelock.⁴ The Marshfield birth location is more likely to be correct. The records of birth in Barre may be a confusion with Barre, Massachusetts, where Lucius lived for several years.
