Marriage: 19 Jun 1867, Sacramento, Sacramento Co, CA
Notes:
Alfred left Vermont in 1849, crossed the Isthmus of Panama, and arrived in San Francisco in July, on board the Capital. He had a mining claim in Placerville in partnership with Alfred Randolph.
Alfred Randolph's sister, Matilda Randolph, moved from the midwest to California in 1864, having been recently widowed. She married Alfred Wheelock on June 19, 1867. They had two children, Carrie Belle, born March 1, 1869, and Samuel Alfred, born October 4, 1871. Sam married Phoebe Reynolds on 1901. They have no children. Carrie married Martin Luther Shellenbarger on Jan 14, 1906. Their son, John Alfred, was born on Jan 10, 1907. Alfred Wheelock died August 29, 1876 of 'inflammation of the bowel'.
It has been incorrectly reported in various places that Alfred was 'murdered' or 'killed by Indians'. He left his home in Vermont in anger, and for many years withheld communications with his father, who though he was dead. Finally, his wife to be, Mathilda (Randolph) Baldwin secretly wrote to Alfred's father, telling of his whereabouts and safety. His father, Jonathan, was overjoyed at the news, and wrote a warm letter back to Mathilda, who then showed it to Alfred.

The book is entitled "Matilda's Story: A Biographical Novel", by Jacquelyn Hanson, published by Glenhaven Press, 1997, ISBN: 0963726536.)
This is, no doubt, the Alfred Wheelock buried in Hicksville Cemetery, Hicksville, Sacramento Co, CA.1. The headstone gives his birth date as 12 May 1827, death date 18 Aug 1875.
The birth date on the headstone doesn't match the Vermont vital records, and the death date doesn't match that given by Jacquelyn Hanson. Both dates are suspect.
His probate proceedings were probably started shortly before 22 November 1876, the date on a creditor notice published in the Sacramento Bee on 11 Dec 1876, suggesting that he probably died several months prior to November 1876 - consistent with the 29 Aug 1876 death date given by Jacquelyn Hanson.2

Notes:
The will of Eleazar's father, Silas, allowed 1793 leaves bequests to grandson Joseph Wheelock, and granddaughter Phebe Wheelock. (No other grandchildren of Silas by this name are recorded.) This is the primary evidence linking this Eleazar with Silas Wheelock. Eleazar is not mentioned in the will, indicating that he probably died before 1793, the date the will was allowed.
The birth dates of Eleazar's children (1763,1765) as recorded in Charlton are not consistent with the marriage date to Betty Woodward (1771). The most likely explanation for this is that the birth dates are recorded incorrectly, they should be 1773 and 1775. All ages and dates become consistent when this change is made.
Carlyle Wheelock and Winifred Gonseth, in "Wheelock Genealogy", 1955, take the same position. They indicate that Eleazar married Betty Woodward, citing the same evidence as presented here; but indicate birth dates for Joseph and Phebe in 1773 and 1775 respectively.
