Rev. Arthur Wheelock was the son of Rev. Albert H. Wheelock. He was born about 1892 in Hingham, Massachusetts. He died at the Cape Cod Hospital on Wednesday, 23 May 1984 at the age of 92.
He married Pauline M. Sanderson.
He had two sons.
Arthur was a graduate of Marlborough High School in 1910, Dartmouth College in 1914, and Andover-Harvard Theological Seminary in 1917. He received an honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from Eaton College in North Carolina. This degree was conferred for his involvement in the merger of the Congregational-Christian church with the Evangelical and Reformed Church.
Arthur is listed as the minister of the Bedford church while he was a student at Harvard Divinity School, in 1915 and 1916. The yearbooks in 1917 and 1918 mention that J. V. Garton, a Baptist, was minister of the church.
Arthur was ordained at the Church of Christ (Congregational) in Bedford on Wednesday 24 October 1917. His father, Rev. Albert H. Wheelock, gave the ordaining prayer. Arthur was installed at the church on 24 October 1917.
Arthur served in the United States Army in Europe during World War I in the 23rd Infantry, Second Division. The church in Bedford retained Arthur as its minister while he served in the First World War.
He was called as pastor of the Free Church in Andover, Massachusetts in 1920; Willimantic, Connecticut in 1924; Church in the Highlands, White Plains, New York in 1931; Union Christian Church in Lihue, Hawaii in 1959.
He was one of the members of the executive committee of the Congregational Christian Churches that worked on the merger with the Evangelical and Reformed Church, forming the United Church of Christ.
He retired to Osterville, Massachusetts in 1858 and lived there until his death on 23 May 1984.
In 1964 he became Executive Secretary of the Congregational Christian Historical Society, and served in that capacity until 1971.
