Mabel Stockwell Kennedy, in "The Stockwell Genealogy", 1983, writes the following about William Stockwell:
"According to family tradition William Stockwell was born in Scotland about 1650, and as a young man he was induced aboard a ship sailing for America. On its arrival he was indentured in accord with the custom of the times for payment on his passage. After he gained his freedom, William married and settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts. Records of the births of the first two children are to be found at Ipswich, and while the others cannot be located in the town records it is known that the family ws still living in Ipswich as late as 1700 when William Stockwell had a seat assigned to him at the town meetinghouse."
"In 1704 the town of Sutton, Massachusetts was granted by the Governor of the Province. Settlement was delayed by Queen Anne's War, but in 1714 the proprietors, in order to encourage settlement, offered 100 acres free to each family to be settled there within a specified period. A list dated 1717 of the thirty families to receive these grants includes the names of William Stockwell, John Stockwell, and William Stockwell."
"Records of the First Congregational Church at Sutton, Massachusetts show that "Widow Stockwell" was received into the church in 1729. Also, records of the Town Clerk at Sutton giving the assignment of seats in the town meetinghouse and dated December 20, 1731, make provision for a seat for "ye widdo Stockwell". Since provision is also made for each of the sons of William Stockwell, Sen., "ye widdo" would have to be the widow of William Stockell, Senior."

Rev. Alonzo Wheelock, DD is presumed to be the son of John Wheelock and Dorothy Wilder, based on the birth date of 7 Feb 1804, given in several different accounts, which matches the birth date of Alonzo Wheelock recorded in Heath, MA. His birth place is given as Vermont in one account, and Fish Creek Flats, NY in another. His father moved to Fish Creek in 1813, and Alonzo, no doubt, lived there in his youth, which may explain the reference. His true birth location, however, was most likely Massachusetts. Both the 1850 and 1870 Census indices identify his birth place as Massachusetts, and his birth is recorded in Heath, MA. His death notice implies that he was orphaned by 1812. This marks the approximate date his father and brothers moved to Fish Creek, NY. Both his parents were alive in 1812, so the "orphan" reference is problematic.
The death notice for Rev. Dr. Alonzo Wheelock, as given in "Death Notices 1819-1899 reported in the Fredonia Censor and a few other sources", compiled by Lois Barris, published 1992 by the Chautauqua County Genealogical Society, reads as follows:
"After 10 day illness... Became pastor of Baptist Church, Fredonia 3 Oct 1857 and has res here ever since except for 16 months (Apr 1863-Sep 1864) when pastor of Bapt Ch in Piqua Oh. Born Vermont 7 Feb 1804; died in his 70th yr...Was left an orphan at 8 in care of an elder sister...Grad Madison Univ and pastor in Norwich NY, Oswego, NYC and Elbridge NY before coming to Fredonia."
The 1 Sep 1842 issue of the New York Daily Tribune contains a death notice for Alonzo's daughter, Hellen Sophia Wheelock: Died: "In this city, Aug. 2?, Hellen Sophia, daughter of Rev. Alonoz Wheelock, of this city, aged 3 years, 1 month, and 2 days." (Source: www.NewspaperAbstracts.com, 23 Jan 2003)
Rev. Alonzo Wheelock, DD, was pastor at the Fredonia Baptist Church from 1857 to 1861. The following biography was extracted from "The Centennial History of the Fredonia Baptist Church, Fredonia, NY, 1808 - 1908", published probably 1908 in Buffalo, pages 68-70.
REV.ALONZO WHEELOCK,D.D.
Alonzo Wheelock was born in Fish-Creek-Flats, Oneida county, N.Y., February 7, 1804.
He graduated from the Hamilton Literary and Theological Institute at Hamilton, N.Y., in 1833. He also received an A.M. in 1846 and D.D. in 1857, the name at both dates being Madison University. He entered the Seminary at Hamilton from Panton, Vermont. He worked his way through school, having no pecuniary assistance from anyone. His first pastorate was at Delphi, N.Y., where he was ordained. His next pastorate was at Oswego, N.Y. He was pastor at Norwich, 1838-1840. He was pastor of Sixteenth Street, New York City, 1840-1850; at Elbridge, N.Y., 1850-1853; at Fredonia, N.Y., 1857-1861; at Piqua, Ohio, 1863-1864. This was his last pastorate. He lived in Fredonia from 1864 to the time of his death, February 25, 1873.
He married Esther Wells, June 6, 1833. She died and he married Elizabeth Maria Bacon, November 7, 1836. By his second marriage there were two daughters, Mary Ester [sic] Wheelock, born in Owego, Aug.9, 1838, and Lillian Wheelock, now Mrs.Judge Johnston, of Piqua, Ohio. Mary E.Wheelock married J. J. Parker of Fredonia, N.Y.
Dr. Wheelock was an excellent pastor, a safe, discreet, counsellor, and a most careful and critical student of the Holy Scriptures.
At the regular weekly prayer meetings his expositions of the chapter read were always of remarkable freshness of treatment, lucidity of analysis, and simplicity of expression.
While pastor in New York City, he was sent as a delegate to a World's Convention in London, England.
Elizabeth M. B. Wheelock was born March 6, 1815, in Leroy, N.Y. (or Rochester, N.Y.). She died at the home of J. J. Parker, Fredonia, N.Y., February 1,1891.

There is a record of marriage between Alvan Wheelock and Olive Warren, 22 Jan 1786, in the Brookfield Vital Records. "Wheelock Genealogy" by Carlyle Capron Wheelock and Winifred Gonseth indicates that this is the same Alvan.
Alvan Wheelock removed to Litchfield, NY, in 1791.
A comprehensive report on his ancestry and descendants was compiled by Danford Edward Wheelock (and others), "The Litchfield Wheelocks", Frankfort, NY, 1980.
