Her funeral notice in the Sacramento Bee reads as follows: "Funeral Services for Mrs. Elizabeth Wade, who died at her home here yesterday will be held Monday morning at 11:30 o'clock in the Pioneer Cemetery at Hicksville. Mrs. Wade, a native of Kansas, crossed the plains in the early sixties with her mother and the family of her grandfather, Gardner Randolph. The family settled in Sacramento County in the old Hicksville section near Arno. The deceased was the wife of the late Henry M. Wade, a native son of Sacramento. She leaves three daughters and two sons."¹

Notes:

Lewis C. Baldwin died in an accident while digging a well on his property near Randolph, Riley Co, Kansas. The death notice identifies him as the son-in-law of Mr. Gardner Randolph, "a gentleman well known in this part of the State.¹

Matilda Baldwin administered the estate of her late husband, probate filed in Riley Co, KS, 13 May 1864. Gardner Randolph and James Humphrey posted bond.²

The probate records identify three minor children under 14 years of age: Mary Jane Baldwin, Elizabeth Baldwin, and Lewis Gardner Baldwin.³

Lewis Baldwin's probate records identify the date of death as 15 Aug 1863, in contrast to the newspaper articles, which indicate a death date of 20 Aug 1863.

In 1880, Mary's mother, Matilda Wheelock, was enumerated in the U.S. census living in Dry Creek, Sacramento, California. Mary was not in the household. But in the neigboring dwelling is Mary Douglas, wife of George Douglas, age 20, born in Kansas, parents born in Illinois.

The 24 December 1959 death notice for Mary's brother, Samuel Alfred Wheelock, confirms that her married name was Mary Douglas.¹

She was born in Rehoboth, and emigrated to Calais in the winter of 1793 and 1794. In her elder years she lived with her youngest children in Worcester, MA, where she died on 3 Dec 1851.
