She is enumerated in the 1860 census living with her family in Calais, age 6. In 1870 she was working as a domestic servant for a family in Plainfield. In 1880, she is again living with her family in Wolcott, VT.

In 1890 she married James M. Hill in Boston, her occupation given as seamstress.

In 1900 she was living with her husband and son James, age 9, in Somerville, MA.

By 1910 her husband had died. She is enumerated in the 1910 census living in Weymouth, Norfolk Co, MA, with her son James H. Hill. She was widowed, per census, had only one child, and was a nurse, working for private families.

She apparently lived in Weymouth until her death, which occurred on 21 July 1938 (per MA Death certificate). She is found there in the 1929 Weymouth city directory, living on Payne Ave, and in the 1932 directory, again on Payne Ave. Other years were not searched.¹

Research Notes:

M. Waite in Wheelock Family of Calais identifies her husband's surname as Bennett. But the Boston record of her marriage to James M. Hill implies otherwise. It identifies her parents as Arthur and Fanny Pierce, her age 35, and her birth place as Montpelier, VT. The marriage was her first, his third. She died in Weymouth, MA, in 1938, still carrying the surname Hill; so it is unlikely that she remarried. Her death certificate confirms that she is the daughter of Arthur L. Pierce, born Woodbury, VT, and Fanny A. Wheelock, born in Calais, and the widow of James M. Hill. The age at death agrees with the birth date of 4 April 1854, given by Waite, and confirms that she was born in Montpelier.
