Lemuel was a resident of Sutton, Worcester Co, Massachusetts when he married Anne Putnam in nearby Oxford.

According to Gazetteer of Washington County, Vt., 1783-1889 Lemuel worked for Maj. Nathaniel Davis for a season or two, cleared a small piece of land, built a log house, returned to Sutton, "his native town," married Anna Putnam, then set off immediately for his new log home back in Montpelier.¹

He and Parley Davis were voted haywards in Montpelier in Mar 1795.²

An obituary for his brother, Alvin McKnight, states that Alvin emigrated from Douglas, Mass. "under the care of his brother, Lemuel McKnight, who adopted him into his family."³

Alvin's VT death record identifies his father as Thomas, implying that Lemuel's father is probably also Thomas.

Lemuel McKnight of Montpelier wrote his will on 21 June 1827, witnessed by Waren Kelton, Alvin McKnight, and Harriet McKnight. He appointed his son, Putnam McKnight, sole executor, and left him the bulk of his estate, including the farm. He left his household furniture to his wife, Anna, to be split at her decease equally between his two daughters, Salley Gray, wife of John Gray, Jr, and Clarissa Cate, wife of Isaac Cate. In addition, he left seventy-five dollars to his daughter Sally Gray. The will was proved 8 Mar 1850.⁴
