Per Vermont death record, James Allen was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the son of Thomas Allen and Mary West.

Some online genealogies, without sources, claim that Polly Allen (wife of Elijah McKnight), and Rebecca Allen (wife of James McKnight, who connection with the McKnight family of Douglas is unknown) are siblings of James. Rebecca was living with James and his wife in East Montpelier in 1850.

In 1850 Susan, age 70, born Mass, was in East Montpelier, Vermont, with her husband, James Allen, age 64, farmer, born Mass. Also in the household was Lemuel McKnight, age 38, farmer, born in Vermont, and Rebecca McKnight, age 66, born Vermont.

Rebecca McKnight was probably Rebecca (Allen) McKnight, who married James McKnight in Montpelier, 28 July 1811, b. ca 1784 in Mass, d. Oct 1864 in East Montpelier, aged 80 yrs.¹

Rebecca (Allen) McKnight was likely a sibling of James Allen; Lemuel was her son. Where James McKnight fits into the family has not been determined.
