Sally Howe
Birth: 10 Jun 1799
- Daniel Waite Howe, Gilman Bigelow Howe, Howe Genealogies: The Genealogy of John Howe of Sudbury and Marlborough, Massachusetts, 3 vols. (Boston: NEHGS, 1929), vol. 1, p. 97; online at Archive.org (https://archive.org/details/howegenealogiesb01howe/page/97/mode/2up : accessed 8 Feb 2023).
Father: Jabez Howe
Mother: Relief Wheelock
Notes:
The Gazetteer and Biographical Record of Genesee County, NY states that Sally, daughter of Jabez and Relief (Wheelock) Howe, married Salmon B. Lusk, son of William and Althea (Sanford) Lusk.1
Yet it is unlikely that the Sally Howe who was born 10 June 1799 married Salmon Lusk. The woman who married Salmon Lusk was born about 1820, per U.S. and New York census records. She was executrix to her husband's estate, and submitted her husbands will to the probate court on 15 Mar 1897.2 It is unlikely Salley did this at the age of 98. She died in Batavia, 28 Dec 1899.3
If the Sally who married Salmon B. Lusk was indeed the daughter of Jabez and Relief (Wheelock) Howe, then one of the following must be true: (1) Sally Howe's birth date in Howe Genealogies is incorrect, or (2) Sally Howe, born 10 June 1799, died, and another Sally Howe, b. ca. 1820, was born to Jabez and Relief (Wheelock) Howe.
It is also possible that the Gazetteer and Biographical Record of Genesee County, NY is wrong. Possibly Sally was not the daughter of Jabez and Relief. But the Gazetteer is corroborated by the obituary for Salmon B. Lusk, which also states that his wife, Sally, was the daughter of Jabez and Relief Howe.4 Another obit says the same thing.5
In addition, an 1851 probate notice for Jabez Howe lists Sally Lusk, wife of Salmon B. Lusk, as an heir.6
Finally, the death notice for Mrs. Sally H. Lusk was published in the 28 Dec 1899 edition of The Daily News (Batavia, New York). It states that she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jabez Howe, and was born in Batavia on 7 June 1819.7
So it seems likely that Sally really was the daughter of Jabez and Relief. Either the first Sally died, or she never existed. The 1830 census is consistent with this theory. It shows Jabez, age 50 to 60, a woman 50 to 60 (Relief would have been 53), a male 5 to 10 (identity unknown), and a female 10 to 15 (possibly the second Sally, who would have been about 10).
For further information, see the notes for Sally (Howe) Lusk, b. 7 June 1819 in Batavia, Genesee County, New York.
