- Virginia A. Wheelock, born calculated 17 Oct 1910, Denver, CO
Spouse: Edward A. Malin
Marriage: about 1928
Notes:
In 1900 Grace was 13, listed as Gracie in the census, born Aug 1886 in Kansas, living in Kansas City, Jackson County, Kansas, with her parents, Adolphus and Alice Haines. Her sister, Hazel V. Haines, age 6, was also in the household.
She was a friend of Lillie Immer, half sister of Charles Henry Wheelock.1
She married Charles in 1909, and the two were living in Denver, Colorado in 1910, where their daughter, Virginia, was born. By 1920 they were living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Charles died in 1925, after which Grace married Edward A. Malin of Pittsburgh, probably after 18 Oct 1928, when Edward received a divorce decree against his wife, Frieda.
In May of 1931, Grace, who had a broken ankle, was rescued from a fire in Pittsburgh by her daughter, Virginia Wheelock.2
On 17 Oct 1931, Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Malin announced the marriage of their daughter, Miss Virginia Wheelock to William Randall, Jr.3
By 1940, Grace and Edward were living in Kansas City, Missouri. In May 1940, Grace Malin, of Kansas City, was listed as a surviving daughter in the obituary of her father, Adolphus Haines.4
She died in Abilene, Kansas, at the age of 81, and is buried there. Grace's obit in the 11 Jan 1968 edition of The Salina Journal refers to her as Mrs. Edward A. Malin, and later as Mrs. Grace Malin. She died 10 Jan 1968 in Abilene, formerly of Denver, Colorado. Survivors included her sister, Mrs. Arthur Hess, of Abilene - no doubt the Mrs. Hazel Hess of Abilene mentioned in her father's obit.5
Research Notes for Grace Haines:
In 1908, Grace Haines lived in Kansas City, She was friends with Mrs. Lillian Immer [probably Lida (Beetch) Wheelock's, daughter, who married Ferdinand Immer], and worked, for a time, at the Crescent Amusement Company in Hamburg, Iowa.1
She was a resident of Kansas City, Missouri, when she married Charles Henry Wheelock in April, 1909.6
She was living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1920, the last time she appears in the census as Grace Wheelock.
Per 1910 census, her father was born in Pennsylvania, mother in West Virginia. Per 1920 census, her parents were both born in West Virginia. Searching the 1900 census for residents of Kansas City, Missouri, with surname Haines, who were born in West Virginia leads to Adolphus and Alice Haines.
Adolphus Haines was a well known jeweler in Kansas City, Missouri. His obit, published in the 2 May 1940 edition of The Kansas City Times states that he was born in Pennsylvania, and left two sons, William C. Haines, and Guy A Haines, both of Kansas City; and two daughters, Mrs. Grace Malin of 3121 Jackson Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri, and Mrs. Hazel Hess, of Abilene, Kansas. Mrs. Grace Malin is probably the husband of E. A. Malin who raised Virginia A. Wheelock, Grace's daughter (refer to notes for Virginia A. Wheelock).4 Grace Malin was the informant on the death certificate for her father, Adolphus Haines.7
In 1930, Grace Malin, age 39, born about 1891 in Missouri, was living in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, wife of Edward A. Malin, 39, born in New Jersey. In 1940 she was 52, born Kansas, living on 3121 Jackson St, Kansas City, Missouri, with her husband, Edward A. Malin, age 50, born in Pennsylvania. Their residence in 1940 exactly matches the obituary of her father, Adolphus Haines.
