He was the son of Michael Hammett and Eunice Putnam, per death record. He died intestate. His probate decree, dated 8 Jan 1856, identifies his widow as Lavina P. Hammett, and other heirs as George E. Hammett and Lewis Hammett. The administrators of the estate were Lawson Hammett and Samuel S. Kelton.¹

Notes:

He was born in Massachusetts. At the age of four, his parents moved to Calais, drawing Perry from Montpelier to his new home on a sled.

He enlisted as a fifer in the war of 1812. He served at Fort George, NY, was present at the battle of Niagara, the battle of Lundy's Lane, and at the seige of Fort Erie. He was honorably discharged at Sacketts Harbor, and in advanced age drew a pension from his service.

He lived in Calais until 1836, when he came to Montpelier for a time, engaging briefly in the manufacture of pianos. He is enumerated in the 1840 census living there. He later moved to Stowe, where he is found in the 1850 and 1860 census, then to Northfield, where he remained until his death.

He was a tinker by trade, and continued to play the fife his entire life.

Research Notes:

According to his son's Vermont death record (Winfield Scott Marsh), Perry Marsh was born in Petersham, Massachusetts. The U.S. census consistently identifies his birth place as Massachusetts (except for 1860, which says Vermont). However, his service records for the War of 1812 identify his birth place as Brookfield, Massachusetts.

His father lived in Brookfield when he married Asenath Ainsworth there in 1793 per vital records of Sturbridge, Massachusetts (see also Brookfield vital records). For that reason, and the early date (1815) on his War of 1812 service records, Brookfield is likely his correct birth place.
