Abel was baptised under the name Alexander on 9 November 1799 at the Trinity Church in Boston, MA.. Per the 27 Mar 1811 edition of the Columbian Centinel, his name was changed from Alexander Wheelock to Abel Wheelock, Jr. This explains the overlap between the first Abel born in this family, and this Abel.

The Hollis Street Church in Boston has a marriage record for Abel Wheelock and Hepzibah Mock, 25 May 1826 (www.NewEnglandAncestors.org). The same church has a death record for Mathew N. W. Wheelock, son of Able, buried 28 Sep 1827, age 3 months.

Abel is enumerated in the 1860 Federal Census, living in Boston, Porter, age 60, living with Eliza Wheelock, age 56, Albert T. Wheelock, age 21, Mason, Susan Tucker, age 45, and Rebecca Tucker, age 38. Abel's birth place is listed as Dorchester, MA.

His 1864 Boston death record identifies his parents as Abel and Catherine.

Abel is buried at Dodge Cemetery, in Hampton Falls, NH, next to his wives Caroline and Eliza.

The following death notice was transcribed from a newspaper clipping, found in the effects of Betty (Wheelock) Sullivan, his niece, name and date of newspaper not known:

Maurice Wheelock, 85, a retired farmer and barber, died at 7am, Sunday Dec 5, 1971 in the Tri-County Memorial Hospital, Gowanda. He had been in ill health for several months. Mr. Wheelock operated a barber shop in Collins, NY. He was born in the Town of Villenova, Nov 26, 1886, a son of the late Millard and Persis Lewis Wheelock. Mr. Wheelock was a member of the Gowanda Baptist Church. He is survivied by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2pm, Wednesday at the Jaquay Funeral Home where friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight: 2 to 4, and 7 to 9pm Tuesday. Burial will be in the Prospect Cemetery, Forestville.

Research Notes:

She is called Mariah Wheelock in one record of marriage to Lewis Burnham, and R. M. Wheelock in another (in which she is identifed as the daughter of Welcome).

She appears in the 1860 census in Montpelier, as R. M. S[L?]. Burnham, age 41, born Vermont, living with Lewis Burnham, age 53, hotel keeper, also born in Vermont.

In 1870 she is listed in the census as Safronia Burnham, age 55, born Vermont, with Lewis Burnham, age 64, farmer, born Vermont, living in Montpelier.

Lewis Burnham died 2 July 1874, per gravestone, aged 68 years 6 months.¹ His widow, R. M. S. Burnham petitioned the probate court to appoint Samuel S. Kelton of East Montpelier as administrator.²

She is listed in the 1880 census as Maria R. S. Burnham, age 65, born Vermont, boarder in the household of Horace W. Kempton in Montpelier.

In 1900 she was a patient in a hospital in Montpelier, aged 84, listed as Rophima Burnham, no birth date given, widowed.

Mrs. R. M. L. Burnham died of senility in Montpelier 9 Oct 1901, aged 87 years, born in Calais, Vermont, daughter of Workum (sic) Wheelock.
