Spouse: Adams Wheelock
Marriage: 25 Oct 1829, Charlton, Worcester Co, MA
- Charlton Vital Records to 1850
Notes:
The records of Polly (Converse) Wheelock include a group sheet for the family of Benjamin Wheelock and Elizabeth Thompson. These records identify Ruth's birth date as 3 June 1771, no death date given.
Ruth married Thomas Morey in 1789. No birth records for children of Thomas and Ruth Morey are recorded in Charlton, or nearby Sturbridge, Spencer, or Oxford. However, the 1872 Charlton death of John Morey, born in Charlton, son of Thomas Morey and Ruth is recorded in the MA vital records, book 249, p. 294.
No death record for Thomas Morey has been found in Worcester County.1.
Thomas Morey is enumerated in the 1790 census, living in Charlton, age greater than sixteen, with two females, one of whom is probably Ruth.
Thomas Morey is enumerated in the 1800 census, again in Charlton, age 26 to 44, with (presumably) Ruth, also 26 to 44, and 5 children: 3 boys under 10, a girl under 10, and a girl 10 to 15.
Thomas Morey is enumerated in the 1810 census, in Charlton, age 26 to 44, with (presumably) Ruth, also 26 to 44. No children are present in the household.
Thomas Morey is not found in Charlton in the 1820 census, but widows Lydia Wheelock and Ruth Morey are enumerated living together in Charlton, both age 45 or older.2
In 10 March 1815, Ruth Morey signed a deed of sale for land in Charlton she inherited from her father Benjamin Wheelock, to Abner Wheelock. In the deed Ruth identified her residence as Hamilton, Madison County, NY. Her husband Thomas Morey did not sign the deed.3
At about the same time (11 Feb 1815), Ruth's female siblings Tammy Dunbar (also of Hamilton, NY), Eleanor Jones (of Charlton), and Charlotte Bemis (of Spencer) also sold land inherited from their father, to Abner Wheelock. Their husbands signed the deed.4
The fact that Thomas Morey did not sign the deed suggests that he may have died prior to 10 March 1815. Possibly he was the Thomas Morey who died during the War of 1812 in Sacketts Harbor, 29 Nov 1813.5
In 1829, "Mrs. Ruth Morey" married Adams Wheelock in Charlton. This is almost certainly Ruth Wheelock, widow of Thomas Morey. She is not found elsewhere in the 1830 census (including in the household of her son, John, also in Charlton), nor is there any other matching record of Ruth Morey in Charlton.
She died in 1833, age 61, consistent with her birth date, as recorded by Polly (Converse) Wheelock.
Unfortunately, no probate record has been found for her death.
