He was probably the son of John Benham, who was a resident of Riga, Genesee County (later Monroe County), New York, when the 1810 census was taken. An unsourced genealogy at FamilySearch identifies his parents as John Benham and Eliza Buell.¹

Hubbard first appears as head of household in the 1840 Census, living in Moriah, Essex Co, NY, age probably between 30 and 39. Also in the household are a young man, between 20 and 29, a young girl, under 5, another between 15 and 19, and a woman between 30 and 39.

He appears in the 1850 Census, age 40, born in Vermont, with wife Caroline, age 41, also born in Vermont, and daughter Francis, age 11, and son William H., age 9, both born in New York.

Hubbard S. Wheelock appears in the 1860 Census, age 50, merchant, born in Vermont, with wife Caroline, age 52, daughter Frances, age 20, and son William H, age 17.

Hubbard does not appear in the 1870 Census. But his wife Caroline is living in the household of C E Nichols and F C Nichols (likely her daughter and son-in-law).

He died intestate. His estate was administered by Caroline Wheelock and Calvin E. Nichols. The letters of administration were dated 13 Dec 1869.¹

Notes:

Captain Abel Smith was formerly of Hubbardston, MA, located in Eden, VT. They had three sons, Abel, Asa, and John, and nine daughters, Sally, Lucretia, Matilda, Marcia, Lorenza, Katherine, Betsy, Martha, and Mary. Abel and Salley are buried in Eden Corners Cemetery. Their daughter Lorenza Smith married (1) Daniel Clark, and (2) Winslow Wheelock.¹

In 1860 she was living in Morristown with her daughter, Betsey (Smith) (Clark) Wheelock, and her husband Winslow.
