Accoring to "History of the Town of Medfield, Massachusetts, 1650-1886", by William S. Tilden, 1887 Elisha Smith sold his Medfield holdings in 1701 and 'probably' moved with his wife to Lancaster, MA. However, the records show that he and Elizabeth moved to Windham, CT, not far from where Elizabeth's brother Ralph settled. This is confirmed by "John Redington of Topsfield, Massachusetts, and Some of his Descendants", by Cornelia Redington Carter, Press of David Clapp and Son, Boston, 1909, Pg 55, online at books.google.com, June 2010. The death of Elisha is recorded in Windham (Barbour Collection), and an abstract of his probate is published in "A Digest of the Early Connecticut Probate Records: Hartford district, 1700-1792". Administration is granted to his wife, Elizabeth Smith, widow of sd. decd, 2 Aug 1714. Jonathan Bingham is appointed guardian of Esther Smith, 12 years of age, daughter of Elisha. Ralph Wellock of Windham is appointed guardian of Seth Smith, 12 years of age, son of Elisha Smith, decd. Order is given to Elizabeth Smith, 1 May 1716 to distribute the estate as follows, land to Elizabeth Smith, widow, money to Seth Smith, only son, money to Ester, Martha, and Mary Smith.

This conflicts with the often cited death date for Elizabeth of 1703, and suggests that either (1) she was alive when her husband died in 1714, or (2) her husband married another woman named Elizabeth. The Barbour Collection for Windham shows the birth of Martha, d. Elisha and Elizabeth, b. 26 Apr 1713, Mary, d. Elisha and Elizabeth, b. 23 May 1714. But it also shows Elizabeth, wife of Elisha, d. 20 Jan 1703. The IGI has a 3 Sep 1712 Boston, Suffolk Co, MA marriage record for Elisha Smith and Eliza. Remington; which could refer to Lt. Elisha Smith of Windham, CT.
