Orville enlisted in the Civil War at Jackson, Michigan on September 23, 1861 as a seargeant in Co. K. 8th Reg't Michigan Infantry. On September 9, 1862, Orville Wheelock died in the Battle of Chantilly in the Civil War.

Ruth was a well know educator and Congregationalist in Hartford, CT. From 1785 to 1807 she established a school which tought more than 2,000 young women from around the world. Her tombstone reads:
"Madam Ruth Patten Relict of Rev. William Patten and daughter of Rev. Eleazer Wheelock D. D. Founder and first President of Dartmouth College, NH. She fell asleep in Jesus Dec 5 1831 in the XCII year of her age. She was 78 years a member of the Church, was strong in faith, cheerful in trials, fervent in prayer, full of great works. A mother in Israel."
