Elbert E. Wheelock enlisted 18 Feb 1865 in Co. G, 147th Illinois volunteer infantry and was sent to Dalton, GA., where his regiment saw considerable active service fighting the scattered bands of rebels that remained in that vicinity. He was mustered out at Savannah in July, 1865.
Elbert E. Wheelock was survived at his death by his wife and four children: Bert of Manlius, Jay of Delta, Colorado, Mrs. Cora McMillen of Davenport, and Clifford who was attending college at Upper Alton at the time of his fathers death. An additional child, S. E. Wheelock (Bert?) of Manlius, a furniture dealer, is mentioned in a death notice for Elbert, published in the Sterling Evening Gazette, 24 Feb 1908.
