Marcus Warren Waite, in "The Wheelock Family of Calais, VT", 1940, writes as follows:

"No documentary evidence has been discovered to prove that this Asa was the son of Asa of Calais, yet the weight of circumstantial evidence appears to indicate that he was. The family lived at Cape Vincent, NY, for many years. He was ensign and sergeant in the War of 1812 from Cape Vincent. Late in life, or in 1853, the family moved to Illinois, where he died at the home of his son Oscar, near Apple River, Feb 24, 1858, ae 75, and is buried in Morseville Cemetery three miles southeast of Stockton, ILL. Mrs. Wheelock resided in Stockton until 1882 when she removed to Iowa to be with her daughter, Mrs. Biddleman, and died at Mrs. Biddleman's home in Atlantic, Iowa, in 1890 or '91, ae 94. She was a member of the Methodist Church over fifty years. Buried at Atlantic."

Samuel E. Wheelock purchased a furniture and undertaking business in 1913 from E. E. Dill and F. H. Geyer. The business thrived in Rock Falls, Illinois, becoming something of an institution in that city. "Bert" Wheelock was joing by his two sons, Jay Loomis Wheelock and Elbert K. Wheelock in 1937, at which time the business became known as "S. E. Wheelock and Sons". The business burnt down, but was reconstructed in 1951. (Source: "S. E. Wheelock and Sons - A Rock Falls Tradition!", editorial in the Sterling Daily Gazette, 19 Apr 1951"; kindly supplied by Linda Aust, Aug 2001.)

The children Elbert and Jay Loomis are taken from the above referenced newspaper article. His obituary in the 25 Oct 1944 Sterling Daily Gazette, Sterling, IL, names the same two children; and brothers Clifford E. of Waukegan, and Jay of Boulder, Colorado. One sister, Mrs. Cora McMillen of Sterling is listed.
