The 1880 census refers to him as "William Wheelock." His death certificate refers to him as "William Earl Wheelock." But many other records, including later census records, World War I draft registration cards, and the death certificates of his children all refer to him as "Earl William Wheelock." He probably preferred the name Earl.

The 29 Dec 1826 issue of the Republican Advocate, of Batavia, Genesee Co, NY, contains a marriage notice for Miss Eliza Ann Wheelock and Mr. Jesse W. Taylor, married by Esq. Wilber on 24 Dec 1826 in Batavia.¹

An unsourced family tree at Ancestry gives her birth date as 25 July 1812, and states that she married ____ Taylor.²

The last clear evidence of Jesse W. Taylor in Batavia was on 11 Jan 1828, when a letter was awaiting him at the post office there.³

No Genesee County land records were found in the grantor index for Jesse Taylor.

Research Notes for Eliza Ann Wheelock:

Other possible leads as to the whereabouts of Eliza and Jesse are documented below, and are all dead ends.

A Jesse Taylor is enumerated in the 1840 Census, living in Hamburg, NY. Probably the same Jesse Taylor that enlisted as a private in Hamburg, NY, 29 Sep 1862, in Company K, 160th Infantry. The Civil War Muster Roll Abstract for Jesse Taylor indicates that he died 11 Sep 1863, at US Barracks Hospital, New Orleans, LA. He was age 44, born in Dracut, MA.⁴ This Jesse was born circa 1818 - too young to be the man that married Eliza Ann Wheelock in 1826.

Eliza Ann Taylor died 25 July 1870 in Richmond, Virginia, age 58, born circa 1812.⁵ Per record at FamilySearch, she was a widow, birth place possibly New York (though difficult to read).⁶ However, she appears in the 1870 census (enumerated 21 July 1870), age 59, born Virginia, living in Kempersvile Township, Princess Anne County, Virginia. Relation to head of household (Miles Selden, 46, born Virginia) unspecified. In 1860 Eliza A Taylor was 49, born Virginia, living with Miles Selden, 35, and his wife, Elizabeth, 29, in Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia. Per Virginia marriage record, Miles Selden married Elizabeth R. Taylor, 11 May 1853 in Norfolk, Virginia.⁷ It is therefore, highly likely that Eliza Ann Taylor is her mother, since they lived together in 1860 and 1870. It is possible the Eliza Ann Taylor is the Ann Taylor, living in a boarding house in Norfolk in 1850, age 40, with her presumed daughter, Lizzie Taylor, age 18. Birthplace of both listed as Virginia. And she is probably Eliza A. S. Taylor (28 Oct 1810 to 27 Dec 1885), buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk,⁸ which is the same cemetery that Elizabeth R (Taylor) Selden is buried in.⁹ According to family trees on Ancestry.com, she is Eliza Ann Simpson Cornick, who married Robert Earl Taylor 17 Dec 1827, in Princess Anne County, Virginia.¹⁰ This trail of evidence doesn't connect Eliza Ann Taylor with the woman who married Jesse W. Taylor.

On 30 June 1887, in Toronto, Canada, Martha Jane Taylor, 28, daughter of Jesse and Eliza Ann Taylor, married William Hodgins.¹¹ Martha Jane Taylor is probably too young to be a daughter of Eliza Ann Wheelock. Family trees on Ancestry.com say her mother is Eliza Ann Sims (1830-1913).¹²

The will of Eliza Ann Taylor, late of Erie County, was proved 26 Jan 1872, John J. Taylor named sole executor.¹³ This is probably the Eliza Ann Taylor buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, died 21 Jan 1872, aged 40y 7m 14d, wife of John J. Taylor; not the same Eliza Ann Taylor.¹⁴
