Captain Gideon Wheelock was one of the earliest settlers of Calais, believed to have settled there about the year of his marriage, 1797. His first homestead was on lot 44 of the first division. He was a prominent man in Calais, and held every office of importance in the town. In 1827 he moved to North Calais, where he developed the water power at the outlet of Wheelock Pond. He was captain of the local militia that marched to Platsburg in the War of 1812.
He is buried in Ainsworth Cemetery, on Jack Hill Rd, in Calais, Vt. Headstone indicates GAR POST 29.
The Charlton Vital Records indicate an uncertain marriage date: 31 Jan 1796 or 1797.
