Chapin Wheelock learned the tailor trade and followed the business several years in his home town. He came to Illinois in 1840 and located at St. Charles where he engaged in the clothing business, continuing there until 1853 when he came to Moline and purchased an interest in the paper mill and became superintendent. He retired in 1883. (Source: "Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois, History of Rock Island County", Newton Bateman and Paul Selby, Munsell Publishing Company, Chicago, 1914, page 1494.)

Though not proven, it is presumed that this is the"Joseph 2d" and "Joseph Jr." that appears in the Conway marriage records. He is listed as a blacksmith.
Jospeh Wheelock, b. 21 Sep 1819, d. 19 July 1883 is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Rensselaer Co, NY. Rootsweb records show his wife to be Abigail Allen. (Source: Rootsweb Cemetery Records, Rensselaer Co, NY, Mar 2001). Joseph is not buried in Howland Cemetery, Conway, next to his second wife, Betsey Dickinson; which lends further credibility to the idea that this is the same Joseph.
