INDEX

James fought in the Revolutionary war. He appears on both the Massachusetts and New Hampshire Rolls. In 1776 he served in the Northern Continental Army in Colonel Timothy Bedel's regiment. In 1777 he served in Colonel Zebedee Redding's company, Gamaliel Bradford's regiment.

He married Lois Starkey 28 Jun 1774; the NH marriage record indicates both were of Swanzey at the time. On 26 Oct 1774, James Wheelock b. 1747, bought land in that part of Swanzey, NH, which was formerly a part of Richmond, NH. He sold this land in February 1782. These deeds were recorded in 1789 [1].

Roger F. Kelley, Dean Family Historian, says the following about James Wheelock:

James Wheelock married Lois Starkey. She was born in 1755 and died in 1810. Their children were:

1. child died 1/24/1786 2. another child died 12/20/1786 3. James Wheelock, Jr. born in Swanzey.

Notes:

[1] The Register of Deeds in Cheshire County mistakenly assert that James Wheelock first appeared in their records 1789, the date of record, rather than 1774, when he actually bought the land.

Major C. Wheelock's middle name has been variously given as "Cleveland", "Clifton", and "Chipman". Family records differ as to which is correct; but the burial records of the Bellevue Cemeter in Lawrence, MA confirm that Chipman was his middle name. (Src: Bellevue Cemetery records, researched and kindly supplied by Kenneth Gilbert, descendant of Major C. Wheelock, through Lottie Esther Wheelock, Mar 2011) Major C. Wheelock was a cabinet maker, the first of his line to depart from farming. Major and his wife Mary moved to Lawrence, MA, between 1865 and 1869, where he gained employement in the cabinet making factories. At the time, the industrial revolution was booming in the United States, while the economy of Nova Scotia was depressed. (Sources: [1] Records of Kimber Gadsby Wheelock, a descendant of Major C. Wheelock and Mary Lois North, Aug 2001, [2] Records of Deborah Wheelock Taylor, great-granddaughter of Major C. Wheelock, July 2001, and [3] Kenneth Gilbert, great-great-grandson of Major C. Wheelock, June 2007)

INDEX

Stephen Wheelock, age 36, Carpenter, born NY, is enumerated next to Perry Wheelock, age 28, born NY in the 1860 Westfield, Chautauqua Co, NY Federal Census. Perry is known to be the son of Stephen and Amanda Wheelock, of Westfield, NY, because he appears in the same household in the 1850 Census. By 1850, Stephen was no longer living with his parents, and thus does not appear in their household. His name, and the fact that he was living next to Perry is taken as sufficient evidence to place him as this family.
