Edwin invented a tractor that was later bought by the government and converted into a military tank. This tank, known as the "skeleton tank", became the precursor of modern day tanks. Though the invention of the tank is conventionally attributed to a British Lieutenant in 1914, an article by Major Dennis Gaare has been published in the Jan/Fed 2002 issue of Armor Magazine, making the argument that Edwin M. Wheelock deserves the true credit.
Edwin Wheelock later became a travelling salesman. (Source: Diana McGuffin, a descendant of Edwin Dickinson Wheelock, 1999.)

Eleazar Wheelock's headstone in Long Plain Cemetery, Leverett, MA, indicates a birth date of 23 Feb 1807. This matches the Shrewsbury birth record, and is taken as sufficient evidence to identify him as the son of Gershom and Priscilla (Mason) Wheelock. This is, no doubt, the Eleazar whose death is recorded in Amherst (MA: 446:3).
Eleazar Wheelock was employed by Allen & Thurber gunsmiths of Worcester, MA in 1846. His brother, Thomas Prentice Wheelock, also employed there in the same year, would later become a partner of Allen & Wheelock. (Src: Allen & Thurber payroll records, researched by Paul Henry, 2003.) Eleazar witnessed a Ethan Allen's first patent (number 461) on 11 Nov 1837.
Eleazar is enumerated in the 1880 Census living in Amherst, MA, with Mary W. His occupation is listed as gunsmith.
