Martin was employed in his fathers book bindery, and succeeded him as head of the company when his father died in 1876. He introduced and placed in operation the first hydro electric generator ("water motor") in Berlin. He was elected town superintendent of schools, and represented Berlin in the Legislature of 1880. He served as town clerk, treasurer and justice of the peace. In 1893 he was president of Volunteer Hose, No. 1. Martin had three children: Mabel E., Florence M., and Winona.
