Notes:

Even though no Massachusetts birth or baptism record has been found for Abigail Wheelock, she is presumed to be the daughter of Jesse Wheelock and Abigail Lovitt based on the reference in "American Samplers and Pictorial Needlework", Vol 1, by Betty Ring, pg 256 which identifies her as the sister of Martha Wheelock, who is more concretely connected to Jesse Wheelock (per Northborough Vital Records). Abigail died at the age of 24, shortly after the birth of her second daughter, Abigail Wheelock Gage. Richard Gage then married Abigail's sister, Martha.

A piece of embroidery whose creation is attributed to Martha Maria Gage or Abigail Wheelock Gage, is presumably held by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (along with many other pieces by these sisters). The sampler is dedicated to their mother Mrs. Abigail Gage, and reads as follows:

Sacred to the Memory of Mrs. Abigail Gage, who died March 12, 1807, aged 24 years; Here let the orphan drop the filial tear O'er the frail casket of a mother dear; But where's the jewel? Fled to peace and rest, To mingle spirits with the pure and just. No stately monuments, no sculptor'd rites, Or rhetoric which mournful theme invites, Can paint the loss the orphan child sustains, When death relentless as a conqueror reigns, And calls the parent from this vale so drear; Leaving their offspring, various ills to share. Then reset, dear shade, since death has burst the tieds And wing'd thy soul to more congenial skies : Peace to thy dust, and to thy soul be rest, Till we shall meet, and God shall own us blest.
