Reuben Westcott

Birth: about 1790, probably Cheshire, Berkshire Co, MA

Death: 1 Sep 1863

Spouse: Betsey Wheelock
Marriage: 26 Nov 1812, Windsor, Berkshire Co, MA

  1. Cyrus A. Westcott, born 1819, Erie Co, NY
  2. Laura Fidelia Westcott, born calculated 27 Sep 1822
  3. Harriet Westcott, born calculated 29 Aug 1825
  4. Betsey Westcott, born about 1827, Erie Co, NY

Notes:

Reuben Westcott's parentage is uncertain (see below). He was born about 1790 in Massachusetts (per 1850 census). He married Betsey Wheelock in Windsor, MA on 26 Nov 1812.

Reuben and Betsey moved to New York state shortly thereafter, and settled in Wales, Niagara (now Erie) County, New York, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Both had siblings living in Wales - Betsey's brother, Abner Wheelock, is found there in the 1820 census; and Reuben's brother, Jesse, lived in Wales for a time (per History of Erie County).

Betsey died sometime before 1850, when Reuben appears in the census with a second wife, Sarah. Sarah must have died shortly thereafter, because she does not appear in the 1855 NY state census. Reuben died in 1863, per his probate records, dated 20 Jan 1866, which name the following children: Cyrus A. Westcott, administrator; Laura W. Pattengell, wife of Allen A. Pattengell, of Wales; Harriot W. Fitzgerald, wife of John Figtzgerald, of St. Catherines, Canada; and Betsey W. Tregilgus, wife of Joseph Tregilgus of Buffalo.1

Research Notes:

The evidence connecting this Reuben Westcott with the one who married Betsey Wheelock in 1812 is as follows:

1) The 1820 census lists a Reuben Westcott living in Wales, Niagara (now Erie) County, New York, with a family whose ages are consistent with a couple married in 1812.

2) Abner Wheelock, brother of Betsey, lived in Wales in 1820, and is enumerated in the census within a few lines of Reuben Westcott.

3) Reuben's wife was named Betsey, per an Erie County deed, dated 7 Sep 1840, in which Reuben Westcott of Wales and his wife Betsey sold about half an acre of land in Aurora to Miles Wallace and Horace Harvey (Erie County deeds, vol 60, pg 440). Reuben also had a daughter named Betsey (1850, 1855, 1860 census, and Reuben's probate documents, Erie Co case 24175).

4) According to the History of Erie County, Reuben had a brother, Jesse, that lived in Wales during the 1820s, later moving to Aurora. The 1850 census reveals that Jesse's wife was named Lucy; and the 1860 census reveals that Jesse was born in Cheshire, MA, near Windsor where Reuben and Betsey Wheelock were married. Jesse was almost certainly the man that published his intention to marry Lucy Mason on 5 Feb 1816 in Windsor (per Windsor VRs to 1850). These facts, taken together, render it highly likely that the Reuben living in Wales is the same man that married Betsey Wheelock in Windsor, MA.2

Reuben's Parentage:

Reuben was probably the son of Rufus Westcott and Mary Blanchard of Windsor, Berkshire Co, Massachusetts. Rufus married Mary Blanchard about 1782 (based on his date of birth, 1 Sep 1764, and the birth of his daughter Sophia 7 Apr 1783). He was an innkeeper in Windsor. He is said to have had nine children, including Nancy, Seth, Rufus, Jr., and Jesse.3

Though Whitman's Stukely Westcott genealogy does not explicitly list Reuben as a child of Rufus and Mary, his birth about 1790 likely falls within the child bearing years of Mary (assuming she was of similar age as Rufus). The fact that Jesse was also a child in this family fits, though the Westcott genealogy does not identify Jesse's wife (which would have made the case stronger, because the marriage of Jesse and Lucy Mason is recorded in Windsor, and Jesse's wife was Lucy in the 1850 census in Erie County). Rufus was an innkeeper, possibly passing the avocation on to his children Jesse and Reuben, who were both innkeepers in Wales. Also Rufus had a brother named Reuben, so it is plausible that he would name one of his sons Reuben.

It looks as though several sons of Rufus Westcott went to western New York. There is a Rufus Westcott residing in Holland, Erie Co, New York (a few miles from Wales) in 1830, age between 20 and 30. In 1830, Jesse Westcott was a few miles away in Aurora, and Reuben was in Wales. The three presumed brothers, Reuben, Jesse, and Rufus, all children of Rufus Westcott, form a tight cluster. The only other Westcott found in Erie County in the 1830 census is Seth Westcott, of Aurora, also listed as a son of Rufus and Mary in Whitman's Stukely Westcott genealogy.

It may also be pertinent that the Windsor vital records to 1850 include very few people named Westcott (or variations); but those that are included are exclusively within this family - including Jesse's 1816 marriage to Lucy Mason, John Mason Brown's marriage to Nancy Westcott (a daughter of Rufus and Mary), and the death of an infant child of Jesse (in 1824). The marriage of Reuben Westcott to Betsey Wheelock is the only other Windsor vital record (prior to 1850) for surname Westcott.

John M. Brown (husband of Nancy Westcott) was also residing in Wales in 1830. He is enumerated in the 1830 census, age 30 to 40, next to Reuben Westcott. John M. Brown (of Cheshire, Massachusetts) and his wife, Nancy Westcott moved from Erie County, New York to Naperville Township, DuPage County, Illinois in June 1834. Both are buried there.4

Seth Westcott, born about 1804 in Massachusetts, probably the same one who lived in Aurora in 1830, also removed to Illinois. He is found there in the 1840 and 1850 census, living in Will County (adjacent to Dupage). According to History of Will County, he came there from New York in 1832. The book goes on to say that he "was originally from Vermont," which conflicts with the census, and is probably an error.5
