The ancestry of Reuben Westcott, and the location of he and his wife Betsey Wheelock after their marriage has not yet been determined; but the evidence outlined in the research notes below suggests they resided in Wales, Erie Co, NY.
Multiple men named Reuben Westcott lived in Berkshire County, Massachusetts in the early 1800s, but none of them seem to be the man that married Betsey Wheelock. There was a Reuben Westcott in Cheshire and Windsor, but he married Susanah Leavans in 1795, and remained married to her for the rest of his life (per family tree on FamilySearch.org, Aug 2020). He had a son named Reuben who was too young to be Betsey Wheelock's husband.
A Reuben Westcott is enumerated in the 1820 census, living in Wales, Niagara (now Erie) Co, NY. He was age 27 to 45. In the household was his presumed wife, age 27 to 45. This closely approximates the age that Betsey would have been at this time. There were two young boys under 10, and one young girl under 10. The profile of this family matches what one would expect from a couple married in 1812.
Of interest is the fact that Betsey's brother, Abner Wheelock, also lived in Wales at that time. He is found just a few lines above Reuben Westcott in the 1820 census.
Reuben Westcott is enumerated in the 1850 U.S. census, living in Wales, age 60, born in Mass, married to Sarah Westcott within the last year, age 51, born in Maine, with Betsey Westcott, age 21, born in NY, Francis Knight, age 28, and Mary Knight, age 21, perhaps the latter two being children of Sarah by a previous marriage.
He is enumerated in the 1855 New York State census, widowed, having lived in Wales for 39 years, age 66, born in Mass, with daughter Betsey Westcott, age 27, born in Erie Co, and son Byron Westcott, age 4, also born in Erie Co.
He is enumerated in the 1860 census, age 69, a farmer, again in Wales, with Betsey Westcott, age 33, and Byron Westcott, age 10.
According to the History of Erie County, Reuben Westcott and his brother, Jesse Westcott, both built hotels in the town of Wales Hollow. Jesse built the first in 1826, and Reuben built the second (and only other) hotel, in 1830 or 1831. A Jesse Westcott is enumerated in the 1830 U.S. census living in Aurora, Erie Co, NY (adjacent to Wales). In the household is a male under 5, two males 5 to 10, 1 male 10 to 15, and a male (presumably Jesse) age 30 to 40, and females 5 to 10, 10 to 15, and 30 to 40 (presumably Jesse's wife). Jesse is not found in the 1840 census, but is enumerated in the 1850 census living in Cheektowaga, Erie Co, NY (just northwest of Aurora, near Buffalo), age 53, born in Massachusestts, with his wife Lucy, age 54, also born in Massachusetts, and (presumed) children, all born in New York, James, age 16, Harriet, age 9, Jane, age 8, Hellen, age 6, Alvira, age 4, William, age 3, and Emily, age 6 months. He is enumerated in the 1860 census, age 60, born in Cheshire, MA, with a different wife - Synthy, age 40, born in Aurora, and children, all born in Buffalo, Hellen, age 16, William, age 12, Emeline, age 8, Henry, age 6, Charles, age 4, Louisa, age 3, and George, age 4 months. The latter 4 children are probably children of his second wife. Jesse is no doubt the man who published intention in Windsor, MA, to marry Lucy Mason, of Cheshire, on 5 Feb 1816 (Windsor, MA, VRs to 1850). Given the stated sibling relationship between Jesse and Reuben, it follows that Reuben was probably also "of Cheshire" Massachusetts. Cheshire vital records for the period 1750-1865 were destroyed by fire, complicating research on this family.
Probate records for Reuben Westcott, of Erie Co, New York, dated 20 Jan 1866, case number 24175, indicate that Reuben Westcott died 1 Sep 1863, a resident of Wales. He died intestate, left no widow, but left the following children: Cyrus A. Westcott, administrator, Laura W. Pattengell, wife of Allen A. Pattengell, of Wales, Harriot W. Fitzgerald, wife of John Figtzgerald, of St. Catherines, Canada, and Betsey W. Tregilgus, wife of Joseph Tregilgus of Buffalo. Cyrus A. Westcott lived in Wales and Aurora, born in 1819, died in 1883. There is probably a death certificate for Cyrus A. Westcott in Albany that might confirm that his mother was Betsey Wheelock. The other children may also have death certificates. More research required.HOME INDEX

Joseph Wheelock was a "chainman" in several surveys of land conducted in Ashburnham, MA, prior to its incorporation. He was one of the sixty original proprietors of this town, but never settled there permanently. He was apparently granted the land as payment for the service of his uncle, Timothy Wheelock. The "History of Ashburnham" shows him in the list of original proprietors as follows: "Joseph Wheelock of Lancaster in the Right of his Uncle Timothy Wheelock who served under Captain Anderson." The letter from Albert Wheelock, (William Harrison Wheelock, Sr's grandson), from which the information about William Harrison Wheelock, Jr was derived, states that William moved (probably from Marion, Kansas, where his father lived and operated a ranch) to Woodard, Oklahoma, where he also operated a ranch. and later died of typhoid fever.
His headstone in Marion Cemetery gives a birth date of 1870, in contradiction to the 1867 date in the letter.HOME INDEX
