Marriage: 20 Nov 1884, Middle Creek, Marion Co, KS

  1. Charles Henry Wheelock, born 13 Dec 1887, Gypsum, Saline Co, KS

Notes:

The genealogy of William Harrison Wheelock, Sr. was derived from a letter written to Virginia Rees Burdick by his grandson, Albert Wheelock; and by a typewritten note, written by one of William's grandchildren (a child of Edward Silas Wheelock). This typewritten note was found in the private records of Persis (Park) Ivett, a Wheelock genealogist; it's origins are not known. Nearly all of the data from these two sources are consistent. Whenever an inconsistency was found, the data was taken from the typewritten note, as this seemed more detailed, and thus more accurate.

The New York census of 1850 corroborates the information presented here. It identifies a William H. Wheelock, age 13, residing in the household of Albert Wheelock, of East Hamburg, N.Y.

Albert wrote that some of his ancestors were from Hamburg, Germany. According to the 1850 Census records, the Dorst family was from Germany; and many of them lived close to the Wheelocks in East Hamburg.

William Harrison had 8 children by his first wife. William and 3 of his boys (Albert, Edward, and William) moved from Buffalo, N.Y. to Marion, Kansas circa 1880. His wife (Caroline Dorst) followed him out with 4 daughters, but did not like it and returned to Buffalo. The letter states that William's father had 7 brothers. It also states that William Harrison's oldest son (Jacob) was killed when he was around 14 years old.

Though the source letter from Albert Wheelock, from which most of this information was derived, indicates that William H. Wheelock was from Buffalo, the N.Y. census of 1850 and 1860 place William in East Hamburg, N.Y.

His obituary, published in the 11 June 1908 edition of the Marion Record, states that he was born 9 July 1836 at Hamburg, NY, died Marion, Kansas, 3 June 1908 at 4 am. He was a member of the baptist church. William married at Middle Creek, Marion Co, Kansas, 20 November 1884, Lida A. Doland. He was in the stock business, and was proprietor of the New Elgin hotel. The chlldren present at the funeral were: Mr. Ed Wheelock, banker at Watonga, Okla.; Mrs. E. B. Coen, Bloomington, Ill; Mrs. Lillian Immer and C. H. Wheelock, of Marion. Relatives "from a distance" were: Mr. S. Beetch; Mr. F. Heldstab and Mrs Lizzie Haney, Carlton, Kansas, and Mr. B. Beetch, Enid, Okla.1

Another obituary in the 11 June 1908 edition of the Marion Headlight, agrees with the birth, death, and marriage date above, and lists the children present at the funeral: "Ed Wheelock, who is a banker at Watonga, Okla.; Henry Wheelock of this city; and the step-daughters, Lillian Immer of Marion and Mrs. E. B. Coen of Bloomington, Ill."2

A "card of thanks" was published in the Marion Record. It read: "We wish to express our thanks for the kindness and sympathy extended during the recent illness and death of our husband and father, Signed: Mrs. W. H. Wheelock, Mrs. Immer, Mrs. Coen, C. H. Wheelock, Ed Wheelock."3
