Martha Paul

Birth: 5 Apr 1857, Castleton, Rutland Co, VT

Father: George W. Paul
Mother: Ellen (--?--)

Spouse: William Ava Wheelock
Marriage: 27 Nov 1889, Hudson, St. Croix Co, WI

Notes:

Per certificate of marriage to W. A. Wheelock, Mattie was born in Hydeville [which is in the southwest part of Castelton], Vermont; her parents were W. G. Paul and Ellen Paul.1

Per Vermont birth records, Martha Paul was born 5 April 1857 in Castleton, Rutland County, Vermont. Her parents were George W. Paul, born Whitehall, New York, and Ellen Paul, born in Ireland.2

In 1860 she was three years old, living in Castleton, Rutland County, Vermont, with her parents, George and Ellen Paul, and her sister, Ellen Paul, age 5. Also in the household was Ann McDonald, age 54, born Ireland, widow, and Martin McDonald, age 16, also born in Ireland.

In 1870, Martha Paul was 13, living with her parents, Geo W. and Ella Paul, in Rutland, Rutland County, Vermont. Several of Martha's siblings were also in the household: Ellen, 16, Anna, 10, George, 5, and William, 1, all born in Vermont.

Martha Paul married Thomas Fagan in Rutland, Vermont, 7 Feb 1876.3

In 1880, Thomas Fagan, 32, Martha Fagan, 23, and Mattie Fagan, 3, all born Vermont, were living in Rutland.

By 1885 Martha Fagan was living in Minneapolis. On 10 Jan 1885, the Saint Paul Globe published notice that Martha Fagan sued Thomas Fagan for divorce.4 On 14 Mar 1885, the divorce was granted.5

She married William Ava Wheelock in Hudson, St. Croix Co, Wisconsin, 27 Nov 1889.1 The couple lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where they are found in the 1895, 1900, and 1905 Minnesota and U.S. census enumarations.

In 1902, Mrs. W. A. Wheelock of Minneapolis, Minnesota, attended the funeral of her mother, Mrs. George W. Paul, in Rutland, Vermont.6 Ellen Paul (Mrs. George W. Paul) left a will in Rutland County, dated 11 July 1902. In it, she left bequests to (1) her daughter, Mrs. W. A. Wheelock of Minneapolis, Minnesota, (2) her husband, George W. Paul of Rutland, (3) her daughter, Mrs. J. F. Hanrahan of Lawrence, Mass, and (4) her son George W. Paul, Jr. She named her daughter, Mrs. J. F. Hanrahan executor.7

William married Adelia Steel in Plainview, Texas, 1907.8 The two are enumerated in the 1910 census living together in Lubbock, in the household of William's brother, Frank.

Martha and William must have divorced before 1907, when William married Adelia Steel. The death notice for Martha's father, George Paul, who died 29 Dec 1910 in Rutland refers to a surviving daughter, Mrs. W. A. Wheelock of Victoria, B.C.9 The 16 Dec 1922 obit of her sister, Mrs. Anna Hanrahan, identifies a surviving sister, Mrs. M. (sic, W.) E. Wheelock of San Francisco. A surviving brother is also mentioned - George Paul of Rutland.10

Her brother, George W. Paul Jr was the last of her siblings to die. His obit, in the 13 Mar 1943 edition of the Rutland Daily Herald did not mention any surviving siblings.11

Research Notes for Mattie Paul:

The 1900 census says she was born in April 1864, but that doesn't agree with her Vermont birth record, or early census records, which say she was born April 1857. See below.

Per marriage certificate, Mattie was born in Hydeville [southwest part of Castelton], Vermont; her parents were W. G. Paul and Ellen Paul.1

She must be the Martha Paul born 5 April 1857 in Castleton, Rutland County, Vermont. Her parents were George W. Paul, born Whitehall, New York, and Ellen Paul, born in Ireland.2 She may have had a brother, George Paul, born 2 Aug 1865 in Rutland, Rutland County, Vermont, son of George Paul and Ellen McNeirney.12

George W. Paul was born about 1832 in New York. Ella Paul was born about 1832 in Ireland. Several of Martha's siblings were also in the household: Ellen, 16, Anna, 10, George, 5, and William, 1, all born in Vermont.

A newspaper notice of the marriage of Martha Paul was published in the 8 Feb 1876 edition of The Rutland Daily Globe, reading as follows: "Mr. Thomas Fagan, late of the Bates house, and Miss Martha Paul were married at St. Peter's church on Monday morning."13

The family of George and Ellen Paul was not found in the 1880 census. They were, however, still alive, as both died after 1900, and are buried in the Calvary Cemetery in Rutland, Vermont.14 Two of their children are buried with them, both died before 1900: Willie (1869-1878), and Ellen M. (1853-1896).

In 1880, Thomas Fagan, 32, Martha Fagan, 23, and Mattie Fagan, 3, all born Vermont, were living in Rutland.

The family was not found in the census, but evidence suggests Martha Fagan and her daughter Mattie went to Minneapolis. A newspaper notice, published in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, 14 Feb 1885, makes notice of a complaint by Martha Fagan, plaintiff, against Thomas Fagan, defendant.15 Also, Martha Fagan, 18, born Vermont (presumably Mattie Fagan, the daughter of Martha and Thomas), was living in Minneapolis Ward 3 per Minnesota 1895 census. In 1900 she was in St. Paul, Minnesota, in what appears to be a convent, or a catholic school (St. Josephs Academy).

George W. Paul, presumed father of Mattie Paul, died in Dec 1910. His obit says he was survived by two children, Mrs. Hanrahan of Lawrence, Massachusetts, and a son, George Paul, who lives in the west. Mrs. Hanrahan is presumably his daughter Ann (per FindAGrave). No mention of his daughter Martha.16 Another death notice for George Paul includes Mrs. W. A. Wheelock of Victoria, British Columbia.9

Ellen Paul left a will in Rutland County, Vermont, which proves she was the mother of the Mattie Paul who married W. A. Wheelock. Her will, dated 11 July 1902, left bequests to (1) her daughter, Mrs. W. A. Wheelock of Minneapolis, Minnesota, (2) her husband, George W. Paul of Rutland, (3) her daughter, Mrs. J. H.(?)) Hanrahan of Lawrence, Mass, and (4) her son George W. Paul, Jr. She named her daughter, Y. F. Hanrahan executor.17

Albert Wheelock

Birth: 20 Mar 1836, East Montpelier, Washington Co, VT

Death: 27 Sep 1911, Worcester, Washington Co, VT

Father: Abijah Wheelock
Mother: Sophronia Gove

Spouse: Ann C. Hoyt
Marriage: 7 Dec 1873, Worcester, Washington Co, VT

Notes:

Albert Wheelock served in the 6th Regiment, Company H, during the Civil War. He was a farmer in Worcester, VT. No children.

Research Notes:

The Vermont vital records give a birth date for Albert of 20 March 1837. This disagrees with the census records, which imply a birth date closer to 1836. The 1850 census implies he was born 1835, the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census records imply a birth date of 1836. The 1900 census gives a birth date of March 1836. And the 1910 gives a birth date of 1836.

His Vermont death record gives an age of 75 years, 6 months, 7 days at death, which implies a birth date of 20 March 1836.

Albert Henry Wheelock

Birth: calculated 3 Jan 1805, Oneida Co, NY

Death: 8 Jun 1875, Hamburg, Erie, NY

Burial: Hillcrest Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hamburg, Erie Co, NY

Father: Silas Wheelock
Mother: Rena Baldwin

Spouse: Lucina Clark

  1. Laura Wheelock, born 17 Nov 1830, Hamburg, Erie Co, NY
  2. Maryette Wheelock, born 4 Nov 1834
  3. William Henry Harrison Wheelock, born 9 Jul 1836, East Hamburg, Erie County, NY
  4. Oscar Wheelock, born 31 Dec 1840, Hamburg, Erie Co, NY

Notes:

Albert Wheelock purchased for $134.60 30 acres in East Hamburg, Township 9, Range 7, Lot 34, on 21 Oct 1830. This was part of the 150 acre parcel originally purchased by his father.1

On 15 Jan 1832 Albert and his wife Sena sold this property back to Silas Wheelock for $300.2

In subsequent years, Albert engaged in land transactions with Elijah Colvin and his wife, Maria; Amos Colvin, and his wife Maryette; William Ranlett, and his wife Orpha; William H. H. Wheelock; Oscar Wheelock, and his wife Nancy Jane; and Matthias Walde, and his wife Elizabeth.3

According to family records, Albert lived one winter with his brother Homer, in Fredonia, to go to school.4 Otherwise he lived in Hamburg his entire life.

He first appears as head of household in the 1840 census, living in Hamburg, age 30 to 39, with two females 14 or under, a male under 5, and a female, presumably Lucina, age 20 to 29.

In 1850, Albert was 44, a farmer, living in Hamburg, with his wife, Lucina, and children Laura, Mariette, William H., and Oscar.

Per 1865 New York state census, he was born in Oneida County, New York, probably in Augusta where his parents were living at the time.

He was a resident of Hamburg when he died intestate 8 June 1875. The petition for administration of his estate was filed by his widow, Sena, and states that he left children Laura Smith of Hamburg (called Laura Schmitt elsewhere in the probate documents), Maryette Colvin of East Hamburg, William H. Wheelock of Hamburg, and Oscar Wheelock of East Hamburg, all of full age. William H. Wheelock filed bond and was co-executor of the estate with Sena.5

Anna Maria Wolf Wheelock

Birth: 20 Mar 1887, Chicago, Cook Co, IL

Father: Everett Baxter Wheelock
Mother: Alice E. Leland

Notes:

The transcribed birth record on www.familysearch.org (and www.ancestry.com) clearly shows her birth date as 20 Mar 1887, and her parents as Everett B. and Alice Wheelock. Yet her birth date conflicts with that of her sister Mabel, born 15 Mar 1887. Maria does not appear in the 1900 census. It's possible that she was a twin, who died young.
