The birth of Alonzo Wheelock is recorded in Heath, Hampshire (now Franklin) Co, MA, but it is likely that he was born in Williamstown, Berkshire Co, MA, where the family was probably living at the time (see notes for his father, John Wheelock). The federal and state census records all indicate that he was born in MA, but his gravestone says Panton, VT, and one of his biographies says he was born in NY.

His biography in The Centennial History of the Fredonia Baptist Church, Fredonia, NY, 1808-1908 states that he was born in Fish Creek Flats [Vienna], Oneida County, NY, 7 Feb 1804. He entered the Seminary at Hamilton, NY, from Panton, VT. He graduated from the Hamilton Literary and Theological Institute in 1833. He received an A.M. in 1846 and D.D. in 1857, both from Madison University.

He was a baptist minister, and held pastorates at Delphi, NY, where he was ordained, Oswego, N.Y., Norwich, NY (1838-1840), Sixteenth Street, New York City (1840-1850), Fredonia, NY (1857-1861), and Piqua, OH (1863-1864).

In 1839 he was the executor of the estate of Mary Grandey, his sister. She died 25 Aug 1839, probably in Norwich, Chenango Co, NY, where she lived. In her will, dated 18 June 1839, she called Alonzo her brother, named him sole heir of her estate to be used during his natural life, after which it would pass to his daughter, Mary Esther Wheelock.¹

In Oct 1839 Alonzo published a probate notice in the Albany Argus, identifying all heirs and next of kin of Mary Grandey.²

After his pastorate in Piqua, OH, he moved back to Fredonia, NY, where he died 25 Feb 1873. His death notice in the 5 Mar 1873 edition of the Fredonia Censor states that he was "born Vermont 7 Feb 1804 ... was left an orphan at 8 in care of an elder sister." His parents were both living when he was 8, but it is certainly plausible that he was put in the care of an older sister, possibly Mary or Susan, both of whom were living in Panton, VT.

His Chautauqua Co probate records name the following heirs: Elizabeth M. Wheelock (Widow); Nellie R. Parker, Gracey Parker, Mary S. Parker, minor children of deceased daughter, all of Pomfret; Elizabeth Johnson of Piqua Ohio, full age.³
