Notes:

Eli Douglas was at Stephentown in 1820, age 45 and up. There were two men of that age in the household; possibly one of them was John Wheelock, who called himself "of Stephentown" in a Revolutionary War pension affidavit signed 4 July 1820, but does not appear in the census there (or anywhere). Two females of age 26 to 44 were living in the household, one presumably Eli's wife Betsey.

Eli Douglas was at Stephentown again in 1830, age 60 to 70, with a female age 40 to 50 (presumably Betsey).

Betsey was called "deceased, of Stephentown" in an 1839 probate notice for her sister Mary (Wheelock) Grandey. The probate notice identifies Betsey's daughter, Elizabeth, as Mary's heir and next of kin.¹

Notes:

May Wheelock was an artist who exhibited twice at the National Academy of Design in New York City, in 1877 and 1878. Her painting On the Esopus Creek, dated 1878, can be seen online with a search for "May Wheelock."¹

She was living in Brooklyn in 1855, Mary Ann Wheelock, 13, born in Kings County, living in the household of Henry W. Law, 29, publisher, and Adeline Law, 28, born MA. Also in the household is Caroline M. Wheelock, 23, born in MA, and Ann P. Wheelock [probably her mother Nancy], 55, born in MA.

In 1860 she was again in Brooklyn, 18, born NY, in the household of Henry W. Law, 34, born in NC, and his wife, Adaline P. Law, 33, born in MA. Also in the household wass Nancy Wheelock, age 60, born in MA.

She has not yet been found in the 1865 NY census.

In 1870 she was living in New York Ward 16 District 6, Mary A. 28, "at home," born in New York, in the household of John S. Wilde, 43, retired clothier, born in England, with Caroline Wilde, 38, born New York, and their presumed children, Annie H, 10, John R., 5, and Ellen P, 3. Also in the household was Nancy Wheelock, 70, born Mass.

She has not yet been found in the 1875 New York state census.

In 1880 she was Mary Bigelow, age 35, no occupation, born in Mass, living in New York City, New York, with her husband, Albert Bigelow, 44, Lawyer, born in Massachusetts, with Albert's presumed children from a previous marriage, Paul, 16, John, 12, and Fay, 10. Also in the household was Nancy P. Wheelock, 81, Mary's mother, along with two servants.

In 1900 she was listed in the census as May W. Bigelow, no occupation, with her husband, Albert M. Bigelow, lawyer, living in East Orange, Ward 2, Essex County, New Jersey, with daughter Constance U. Bigelow, born Oct 1881, New York, and Wheelock Bigelow, born Mar 1844, New York.

In 1920 she was May W. Bigelow, lodger, age 75, living in Boston.

On 22 May 1922 she was living in Provincetown, Massachusetts.²

In 1925 she was living in North Hempstead, Nassau, New York, with her son, Wheelock Bigelow.³

She is listed in the 1939 Boston city directory under "Bigelow" as "Mary wid Albert M. died Sept. 4, 1938."

She is likely the Mary (Wheelock) Bigelow whose death is recorded in Boston, death certificate held at the Massachusetts archive, vol 18, p. 481.⁴

She is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. Her gravestone is inscribed with: May Wheelock Bigelow, born Oct. 5, 1841, died Sept. 4, 1938. She is buried with her husband, Albert Marshall Bigelow.⁵
