Notes:
Though his birth is recorded in Heath, he was probably born in Williamstown, Berkshire Co, MA. On 5 Feb 1799, his father sold his Heath property (Franklin Co deeds 12:458), and by the time the census was taken in 1800, the family was living in Williamstown, Berkshire Co, MA. Both of his parents became members of the Williamstown First Congregational Church in 1800. However, the most direct evidence for his birth in Williamstown comes from his War of 1812 enrollment records, which state explicitly that he was born there. However, his gravestone is inscribed with "born in Pittsfield, Mass." The Pike County histories claim that the "Ross brothers" came from Pittsfield, even though most of them were living in Hancock, per 1820 census. William Ross, the leader, was living in Pittsfield in 1820, adjacent to Hancock. It is possible that all members of the party were assumed to be from Pittsfield, since their leader was from there. Pittsfield was also the biggest town in the vicinity, which may explain the frequent references to it.
During the War of 1812, Dexter Wheelock enlisted for service as a private in Captain Leonard Ross's company, 40th U.S. infantry on 14 Dec 1813 at Hancock, Masschusetts. He was discharged 5 April 1815, term expired. Note that Leonard Ross was agent for his fathers Revolutionary War Pension application, and was one of the six Ross brothers that founded Atlas, Pike Co, Illinois. John Ross, one of the six brothers, married Dexter's sister, Dorothy.
Dexter Wheelock is enumerated in the 1820 Census living in Hancock, Berkshire Co, MA, age 16-26, living with a female age 16-26, no children.
His sister Dorothy, and her husband John Ross had gone to Pike County, Illinois in 1821. Dexter and his wife moved there in a similar timeframe.
A biography of his son has the following to say about Dexter:
"Our subject [John Gray Wheelock] was born in Atlas Township, February 16, 1829, and is a son of one of its earliest settlers, Dexter Wheelock, who was a native of Berkshire County, Mass. He [Dexter Wheelock] was a drummer boy in the War of 1812 under Capt. Leonard Ross, and remained with his company until the close of the war, being present at the battle of Sacketts Harbor and other important engagements with the British. After the war he made his way to New York, where he learned the trade of a cooper and there married about 1820, Elsie Gray, a native of New York becoming his wife. They at once started for Pike County, Ill, but stopped on the way at Pittsburg, where he worked at his trade for awhile. They then proceeded on flatboats down the Ohio to Shawneetown, this State [Illinois], where they embarked in an ox-cart for their destination in Atlas Township. They located there in 1821, and Mr. Wheelock followed his trade until his health failed when he engaged in tavern keeping. He managed the hotel the next twelve years, and then started a general store in Atlas which he kept until 1849. In that year he went across the plains to California, and there died in the month of October. His widow survivied him many years, her death finally occurring in Payson, Aug 31, 1881, and there her mortal remains were deposited in the cemetery at that place. She was the mother of two children, Eliza E., now Mrs. Harrington, who lives in Payson, Adams County, and our subject [John Gray Wheelock] who was her second child."1
He is enumerated in the 1830 Census in Pike County, Illinois, with a young boy (under 5), two young girls, and a woman age 30-40. Another male roughly Dexter's age appears in the household. He is enumerated in the 1840 Census, age 40-50, living in Atlas, Pike Co, Illinois, with a boy, age 10-15, a girl, age 20-30, and a woman, age 40-50. Dexter Wheelock does not appear in the 1850 Census; but his wife, Elsie, age 50, born 1799 in New York, is enumerated in the household of John Wheelock, born 1828, Julia Wheelock, and their child Eliza, age 4 months.
"Dexter Wheelock, of the state of Illinois, town and county unknown" is identified as an heir and next of kin of Mary Grandey in an 1839 probate notice.2
