Margaret Moore
Birth: 14 Sep 1890, Cheboygan, Cheboygan Co, MI
- "Michigan, County Births, 1867-1917," database with images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QP71-5DW7 : accessed 5 Dec 2021); citing Birth, various county courts, Michigan.
- Records of Michael Smith-Wheelock, great-grandson of Charles V. Wheelock and Laura (Lancaster) Wheelock, in an email to Roderick B. Sullivan, Jr, dated 21 Apr 2021.
Spouse: Aubrey Vane Wheelock
Marriage: 15 Jun 1908, Cheboygan, Cheboygan Co, MI
- "Michigan, Marriage Records, 1867-1952", online database at www.Ancestry.com, retrieved Aug 2017.
Divorce: 23 May 1914, Wayne Co, MI
- "Michigan, Divorce Records, 1897-1952", online database at www.Ancestry.com, retrieved Aug 2017.
- Maurice Ward Wheelock, born 24 Dec 1908
- Aubrey Moore Wheelock, born 6 May 1910
- Eleanor May Wheelock, born 21 Jan 1914
Notes:
As informant, Margaret Wheelock identified her maiden name as Moore in the death certificate of her daughter, Eleanor May Wheelock, who died 18 May 1914 at the age of just under four months, the father identified as Aubrey Wheelock. At the time of death, the baby, and presumably Margaret were living at 987 Mackinaw St, Ward 3, Cheboygan. The cause of death was not determined. The attendant wrote "I made one visit at above date, child was dead when I got there."1
On 22 Feb 1916, James Moore died in Cheyboygen, address 987 Machinaw St, 3rd Ward. He was born 22 Aug 1831 in Scotland, father's name also James Moore.2
Given that Margaret (Moore) Wheelock and James Moore lived at the same address, a relationship might be expected between the two, perhaps she was the granddaughter.
According to online genealogies, her parents were James Moore and Margaret Johnston. This is consistent with a birth record for Margarate A. Moore, born 17 June 1890, in Cheboygan, daughter of James W. and Margaret Ann Moore.3
Also consistent is a marriage record for James Moore, age 26, born Wayne County, Michigan, and Margaret A. Johnston, age 20, born Canada, married 12 March 1883 in Traverse City, Grand Traverse Co., Michigan. Note that this James Moore is too young to be the man who died on 22 Feb 1916 at 987 Mackinaw St.4
In 1900, Margaret Moore, age 10, born June 1890, boarder, was living in Cheboygan in the household of John B. and Alicia MacArthur. She used the surname McArthur on her marriage and divorce records. According to tradition her parents died early, and she was left in care of the McArthurs.
In 1910 she was again living in Cheboygan, under the name Margaret M. Wheelock, age 19, married, born Michigan, with her first son, "Mauris W. Wheelock," age 1. Her husband is enumerated in a separate household in Cheboygan, with his parents.
She was divorced in 1914. The divorce was initiated by her husband, "on grounds of cruelty." A newspaper article in the Detroit Times, published on the day the divorce was granted, suggests that Eleanor May Wheelock, who had died just a few days earlier, was not the daughter of Aubrey Vane Wheelock.5
So far (Dec 2021), no record of her after her daughter's death has been found for Margaret/Maggie Moore/McArthur/Wheelock in Michigan.
According to online genealogies, her parents did not die at an early age. In 1900, 1910, and 1920, they were living in Romulus, Wayne Co, Michigan. Until a more direct link is found between the Margaret Moore born 17 June 1890 in Cheboygan, and the James and Margaret Moore living in Romulus, there is reason to suspect they may not be her parents. They were living in Romulus when their son, Austin James Moore, was born there 8 August 1889. And they were living in Romulus when their daughter Iva Moore was born there 10 Sep 1896. It is possible they moved to Cheboygan before Margaret Moore was born there on 14 Sep 1890, then moved back to Romulus again. Or perhaps they were just visiting. It is also somewhat problematic that Margaret would have been conceived just a few weeks after her supposed brother, Austin James Moore, was born.
