Research Notes for Emily Gorton:

Some of the evidence establishing the identity of Emily Gorton - specifically the ties to her two husbands is as follows:

1) The 17 May 1847 Westminster marriage record for Emily G. Merriam, widow, and William E. Rice, widower, identifies Emily's parents as Sanford and Roxana Gordon. She was 27, somewhat consistent with her Charlton birth date (with enough subtracted to make her slightly younger than her husband).²

2) Emily and WIlliam E. Rice had a daughter in Westminster, 19 July 1848, Fidelia Ardella Rice.³ In 1850 Emily W. and William E. Rice were living in Westminster, with two daughters from their previous marriages: Clara E. Rice, 5, and Emily M. Merriam, 5. Fidelia Rice was also in the household, age 1.

3) Emily Melissa Merriam was born 23 Dec 1844 in Princeton (bordering Westiminster), daughter of George and Emily Meriam.⁴ The presence of Emily Melissa Merriam in the household of Emily W. and William E. Rice in 1850 ties Emily W. Rice to her first husband, George Meriam. George Meriam died of consumption 7 Jan 1845 in Princeton, before Emily married William E. Rice.⁵

4) Fidelia Ardella Rice married Charles William Nourse in Marlborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, 12 Oct 1869. Fidelia is called Delia A. Rice in the marriage record. Her parents are listed as William E. Rice and Emily W. Gorton, confirming Emily's maiden name as Gorton.⁶

Per census records, he was living with his family in Cavendish in 1810, probably living with his son John R. Wheelock on a farm near Plymouth, VT in 1840, and with his daughter, Sophronia Sawyer at Reading, VT in 1850.

Marriage Date:

Joseph Wheelock of Cavendish and Abigail Barrett of Ashby published their intentions in Ashby on 25 Aug 1791, with certificate to marry granted 1 Oct 1791.¹

These dates contradict the 28 March 1791 marriage widely given in online genealogies (as of Apr 2024), and published in Families of Cavendish: The Early Settlers of the Black River Valley in Windsor County, Vermont by Linda Margaret Farr Welsh.² No original source for this date has been found.
