John Wheelock

Birth: 9 Sep 1733, Lancaster, Worcester, MA

Baptism: 21 Jul 1734, Lancaster, Worcester, MA

Death: 6 Sep 1792, Heath, Franklin, MA

Father: Joseph Wheelock
Mother: Abigail _____

Spouse: Mary Holman
Marriage: about 1755

  1. John Wheelock, born 23 Dec 1756, Leominster, Worcester, MA
  2. Relief Wheelock, born Dec 1759

Notes:

John Wheelock, the son of Joseph and Abigail (____) Wheelock, was born in Lancaster [probably in a portion that is now Leominster], Worcester County, Massachusetts, on 9 September 1733,1 and was baptized at the First Church in Lancaster on 21 July 1734.2 His birth is also recorded in Leominster, which, at the time, had not yet become a separate town.3

On 4 March 1728/9, his father, Joseph, purchased land in the "additional grant of land made to Lancaster." This land was in the northwestern portion of Lancaster on a 40 square mile parcel granted by the Massachusetts General Court in 1713.4

On 11 Feb 1736/7, Joseph, along with his brother John, who had also purchased land in the "additional grant," petitioned the town of Lancaster to set aside the northerly end of the grant as a separate town. The request was eventually honored, and the new town of Leominster was incorporated 23 June 1740.5 It is likely that Joseph moved to that part of Lancaster shortly after he purchased the land there on 4 March 1728/9, and his children born after that date were born in the part of Lancaster that became Leominster in 1740.

On 23 Dec 1754, Joseph sold his farm in Leominster to "his beloved son John of said Leominster, husbandman."6 It is unclear whether his father continued to live on the farm, or went elsewhere.

John Wheelock was "of Leominster" and Mary Holman was "of Stow", Middlesex County, Massachusetts, when they published their intentions in Leominster 14 Aug 1755 and in Stow on the next day.7 They were married by 11 Dec 1755, when John Wheelock of Leominster and his wife Mary Wheelock sold land in Stow that she had inherited from her deceased father, Abraham Holman.8

On 5 March 1760 John called himself "of Stow" when he and his wife Mary sold property in Leominster to Daniel Hapgood of Stow.9 He was "of Leominster" on 22 Mar 1769 when he purchased property in Lancaster from Elijah Beaman, abutting land of Joseph Wilder, Esq.,10 the grandfather of his children's spouses. This likely marks the approximate date that he moved to Lancaster. In subsequent land transactions (starting 25 Feb 1772)11 he called himself "of Lancaster." He received his first full communion in the church in Lancaster on 2 May 1773.12

By trade, John Wheelock was a miller. On 4 Feb 1773 he sold a sawmill and a "Brake mill" in Lancaster to Asahel and Oliver Phelps.13 He was called a miller in two deeds, both dated 10 March 1773. In one of those deeds, his neighbor, Joseph Wilder, Esq., sold 2 acres 72 rods in Lancaster to John Wheelock, miller. The property was located "south of said Wheelock's mill."14 In the other deed, John Bennet, of Lancaster, sold 8 acres 120 rods of woodland in the north part of Lancaster, to John Wheelock, Junr., of Lancaster, miller.14

The early records of Lancaster often attach the suffix "Junr." to John Wheelock, even though his father was named Joseph. This was done presumably to distinghish him from his uncle, who bore the same name. In his will, this same uncle appointed John Wheelock executor of his estate, calling him "John Wheelock Junr. my trusty and well beloved nephew."15

On 14 December 1776 John Wheelock, Junr., of Lancaster sold 2 corn mills in Lancaster to Asahel Phelps for 270 pounds. Relief Wheelock served as a witness.16

He was probably the Sergeant John Wheelock of Lancaster who served in the Revolutionary War in Capt. Fortunatus Eager's company, Col. Josiah Whitney's regiment from 17 Dec 1776 to 27 March 1777, and in Capt. Ebenezer Belknap's company, Col. Nathaniel Wade's regiment from 21 July 1778 to 1 January 1779.17

On 24 September 1777 he sold 3 parcels in Lancaster totalling 20 acres 192 rods to Ebenezer Storer of Boston.18 This is the last recorded land transaction found in Worcester or Middlesex Counties for John Wheelock.

He was admitted to the Congregational church in Heath on 19 April 1789.19

John Wheelock moved to Heath, Hampshire [now Franklin] County, Massachusetts probably before 29 May 1780, when his son, John Wheelock, Jr. of Heath, mortgaged "lot 4" in Heath to Ephraim Carter, Jr. of Lancaster, setting aside a 10 acre reserve for himself containing a corn mill "during his parents John Wheelock & Mary Wheelock's natural life" (see notes for John Wheelock, Jr. of Heath).20 On 18 January 1786 John Wheelock sold a grist mill lying within the same "lot 4" to his son, John Wheelock, Jr., for 60 pounds.21

He died in Heath on 6 September 1792.22 No probate record has been found for John Wheelock in Hampshire or Franklin Counties, nor has any gravestone been located.

  17. Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth, Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War, 17 Volumes, (Boston: Secretary of the Commonwealth, 1907), Vol. 16, p. 1005. Inferred by process of elimination. There were four John Wheelocks from Lancaster/Leominster alive during the revolution. And there were four John Wheelocks from Lancaster who served in the Revolutionary War - John Wheelock, drummer, John Wheelock, fifer, John Wheelock, sergeant, John Wheelock, private. The service records of these four extend past the lifespan of one of the John Wheelocks of Lancaster - the John Wheelock who married Martha Wood - so he is excluded from consideration. John Wheelock drummer is known to be the son of John and Mary (Holman) Wheelock, per his pension record. Based on overlapping service records, the fifer, drummer, and sergeant must be distinct people. The fifer is probably the John Wheelock who married Sarah Willis, based on the use of the Junr. suffix (he was also called Junr. in the records, and sometimes the 3rd), and the fact that musicians were often younger men. By elimination, that leaves John Wheelock who married Mary Holman as the only remaining candidate for the sergeant. The John Wheelock private overlaps the services records of the drummer, but fits within the service records of the other two candidates. Most likely he was John Wheelock fifer, since it is unlikely that John Wheelock sergeant would have later served as private.
