Benjamin was born in South Orange, MA. He settled in North Brookfield, married, and removed to Wyoming Territory. He served in the Civil War; was mustered into service on 3 Feb 1862 with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, serving for North Brookfield. His genealogy is written in the "History of North Brookfield, MA", by Josiah H. Temple; and appears next to that of Rufus Wheelock, also of North Brookfield, who had a son, Joseph, in South Orange. The Brookfield marriage record for Benjamin and Jane identifies Benjamin's father as Rufus (vol 101, pg 172).

Benjamin's birth date is given as 1826 on his headstone, but this contradicts "The History of North Brookfield", which gives a birth date of 1830. His 1856 Brookfield marriage record to Jane Donahue implies a birth date of 1830, and the 1900 Federal Census gives a birth date of Mar 1830.
