Notes:
Josiah was a prominent man in the Town of Sutton, Massachusetts. The local history refers to him as Major Josiah Wheelock. He was town moderator three times in 1814; served as a town selectman in the years 1810 through 1816; and was a representative to the General Court of Massachusetts in 1815.
He was a member of the first brigade, seventh division of the Massachusetts Legionary Brigade. His enrollment date has not been determined, but on 3 Aug 1795 he was promoted to Ensign, on 23 May 1796 he was promoted to Lieutenant, on 31 May 1798 he was promoted to Captain, and on 13 April 1801 he was promoted to Major.1
Benedict and Tracy write in the History of Sutton:2
"Major Wheelock was a clock and watchmaker and jeweler. He had several apprentices, amongst them Capt. Josiah Hall, Simeon Marble, Clark Sibley, Moses L. Morse, Brigham Smith and others. He invented a watch known as the Wheelock watch. It was a great improvement on the old verge watch, and was but slightly improved by the introduction of the 'Patent Lever.' It was really the best watch of his time. He also made superior clocks. He gave an organ to the church, which was played for several years by one of his apprentices, Brigham Smith, son of Capt. Thomas. Major Wheelock owned a factory in Fitchburg. He had no children."
Josiah Wheelock Esq. was a resident of Sutton when he made his will 11 Dec 1829, naming his wife Lucy as sole executrix, and leaving everything to her. The will was filed with the probate court on 6 Jan 1830, and approved on 6 April 1830.3
Parents of Josiah Wheelock:
There are no vital records that directly connect Josiah Wheelock of Sutton to his parents, Josiah and Experience (Clark) Wheelock of Milford; but land and probate records provide proof.
Land Records:
The most direct record establishing Josiah's parentage is a land record in Franklin County, Massachusetts, dated 14 Nov 1793, in which Josiah Wheelock of Milford gave to his beloved son Josiah Wheelock of Sutton, clock maker, several lots in Warwick, Hampshire (now Franklin) County, Massachusetts.4 This deed was not signed by the spouse of Josiah Wheelock of Milford. If it were, it would have more firmly established the identities of the two Josiahs. But there was only one Josiah Wheelock of Sutton, clock maker. And there was only one Josiah Wheelock in Milford old enough to sell land, that had a son named Josiah. So there is no ambiguity about the identity of these two men.
Josiah Jr later sold the properties in Warwick to Joel Batcheldor of Ervings Grant.5
Josiah, Sr., apparently owned considerable land in Warwick, which, no doubt, is why two of his children settled there: Eleazer and Alexander.
Another deed, dated 13 Aug 1804, refers to Josiah Wheelock of Sutton as Josiah Jr, suggesting that his father was also named Josiah.6
Probate Records:
The births of ten children of Josiah and Experience (Clark) Wheelock are recorded in Milford, including Josiah, his brother Obadiah, and his sister Ruth.
The following probate records, summarized below, prove that Josiah Wheelock of Sutton was the brother of Ruth Wheelock.
Josiah's father, Josiah, Sr., died on 28 December 1794 in Milford, leaving a will that identified his son, Josiah, as a beneficiary. The will, dated 24 November 1793, mentioned nine other children, including Ruth and Thankful Wheelock who were non compos mentis (not capable of caring for themselves), and a son, Obadiah Wheelock, who, along with his mother Experience, were charged with the care of Ruth and Thankful.7 This record does not identify the place of residence of Josiah Jr.
On 4 Nov 1814, several years after the death of Obadiah, Josiah Wheelock of Sutton was appointed guardian of Ruth Wheelock, who was non compos mentis.8 This record connects Josiah Wheelock of Sutton with the Ruth Wheelock who was non compos mentis - that is to say, the Ruth who was the daughter of Josiah Wheelock of Milford. The record summarized below proves that Ruth was his sister.
In August 1815, Obadiah's widow, Lydia Pond [who had married Barzelai Pond after Obadiah's death], along with her daughter, Alpha Bowker, and the guardian of Josiah Wheelock of Milford (her son), filed suit against Josiah Wheelock, Esq., of Sutton, charging that Josiah had deceived his sister, Ruth, and was not caring for her in the manner outlined in his father's will. The suit requested that Josiah be removed as guardian of Ruth. In June 1817, Josiah stepped down, citing sickness which prevented him from discharging his duties as guardian.9 This record firmly establishes the Josiah Wheelock of Sutton as the sister of Ruth Wheelock, daughter of the late Josiah Wheelock of Milford. It also connects him to Obadiah Wheelock [his brother].

Notes:
She married Deacon Luther Grandey in Panton, Addison Co, VT, and lived there until he died in 1835. She was administrator of his estate (Addison County, Vermont, Probate, file 2633). Sometime after his death she went to Norwich, Chenango Co, NY, probably to be with her brother, Alonzo Wheelock, who was a Baptist minister there.1.
In her Chenango Co will, dated 18 June 1839, she called Alonzo Wheelock her brother, and named him executor of her estate (Chenango County, New York, Probate, D:284). No children were named in her will.
Her headstone is inscribed with "Relic of Dea. Luther Grandey."
