When their father died in 1783, Chapin (age 17) and his siblings Joel (age 19) and Abigail (age 15) were taken into the care of their uncle, Edward Wheelock.¹

Chapin Kelley moved to Augusta, Oneida Co, NY prior to 6 Nov 1799, when he is first listed as a taxpayer there. He appears on the Augusta tax rolls again in 1800, 1801, and in 1803.²

In a 19 Mar 1802 Worcester County, MA, deed, he refers to himself as "of Augusta". The deed transfers property inherited from his father and jointly owned with his siblings to Joel Kelley "of Barry". The other joint owners are identified as: Robert Kelley late of Barry (sic), Henry Kelley late of Western, William Kelley late of Western, Abner Kelley, Rachel Kelley, John Bacon and Abigail his wife "in her right", Asa Newell and Ruth his wife "in her right", Thomas Town and Mary his wife "in her right", all of Charlton, and Zaddock Billes(?) and Lydia his wife "in her right".³

Chapin Kelley is enumerated in the 1820 census living in Lenox, Madison Co, NY, age probably greater than 45, with children, but no female of Sally Thompsons presumed age (48). In 1830 he is enumerated in Smithfield, Madison Co, NY, age probably between 60 and 69, again with children, and again without a female old enough to be Sally. In 1840 he is enumerated in Stockbridge, Madison Co, NY, age probably between 70 and 79. Chapins ages are consistent with a presumed birth in 1766, as implied in his guardianship.

He is not found in the 1850 census.

It is possible that Chapin Kelley and family did not move between the years 1820 and 1840, even though they appear to live in different towns. Stockbridge was set off from Smithfield, Lenox, and Augusta in 1836; though they may have moved, they didn't go very far.

A Joel Kelley (1803-1850) is buried in the Stockbridge Cemetery, Munnsville, Madison Co, NY, FindAGrave memorial id 24993722. Possibly a son.
