Research Notes:

In 1800 Andrew Neley is the only person of surname Nealy (or similar) living near Calais. He, aged 45 or above, and his family were living in Montpelier, Vermont, with a daughter the same age as Abby Nealy. This is probably the same Andrew Neally of Montpelier, a soldier of the revolution, aged 77, who died in Lee, New Hampshire, circa July 1833.¹

A local history of Nottingham, New Hampshire, contains a genealogy of the Neally family who lived there, including Andrew Neally, stating one of his daughters married a Wheelock. Some family members lived in Lee.²

Based on these set of facts, Abby Neally is thought likely to be the daughter of Andrew Neally and his wife, Abigail Cate.

Notes:

Frederic M. Wheelock, scholar, clacisist, and author was born in Lawrence, MA in 1902. He was educated at Harvard University, obtaining his A.B. in 1925, A.M. in 1926, and Ph.D. in 1933. He authored the well known and widely used textbook "Latin: An Introductory Course Based on Ancient Authors"; or, as it is called by college students everywhere, "Wheelock's Latin".

After graduation, Frederic Wheelock became a Latin instructor at the City College of New York (now City University). He later became a professor of Latin and classics at Cazenovia Junior College, Cazenovia, NY, and the University of Toledo, where he became professor emeritus. From 1969-1970 he was a visiting professor at Eckert College.

Frederic Wheelock died in 1987, at the age of 85, and is buried in Lawrence, MA.
