Birth: about 1766

Death: 15 Jun 1846, Hamburg, Erie Co, NY

Burial: Prospect Lawn Cemetery, Hamburg, NY

  1. Lucina Clark, born calculated 4 Jan 1811, Erie Co, NY

Notes:

Per John Clark, a descendant of Nathan Clark, in a Nov 2003 email, Nathan was born 19 Nov 1768 in Mendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts. Thus, per vital records of Mendon, he would have been the son of Henry and Naomi Clark. However, his gravestone gives a birth date of 1766.

Carlos Wheelock

Birth: 17 May 1829, Calais, Washington Co, VT

Death: 1917

Burial: Jones Cemetery, Vale Perkins, Estrie Region, Quebec, Canada

Father: Perez Wheelock
Mother: Elizabeth P. Cole

Spouse: Esther Ann Guernsey
Marriage: 28 Jun 1849, Montpelier, Washington Co, VT

  1. Martha Ida Wheelock, born 1852

Spouse: Harriet Gardner

  1. Gertrude Lillian Wheelock, born about 1871, Potton, Quebec, Canada
  2. George Albert Wheelock, born 28 Feb 1873, Quebec, Canada
  3. Ralph C. Wheelock, born 18 Jan 1884, Quebec, Canada

Notes:

In 1860 he was living in Calais, age 31, house joiner by trade, with his wife Esther A., age 24, and daughter Martha I, age 8.1

He was enrolled in Company H, 13th Vermont regiment, but he never showed up for duty, and was dropped from the rolls in Dec 1862.2

He went to Canada during the Civil War, leaving his family behind in Calais. His wife divorced him in 1865, and later married George H. Bennet.3

Carlos is found in the 1881 Canada Census, in the town of Potton, Quebec, not far from the Vermont border. He was a mechanic, age 54, born U.S., living with Harriet G. Wheelock, age 33, Gertrude L. Wheelock, age 10, and George B. Wheelock, age 7.4

In 1891 he was again living in Potton, age 61, farmer, Methodist, born in the U.S., with Harriet E. Wheelock, age 40, George Wheelock, age 17, and Ralph C. Wheelock, age 6, all born in Quebec.5

In 1901 he was living in Potton in the household of his son, George Wheelock. The 1901 Canada census lists the birth dates of all individuals. Carlos, for some reason, probably an error, is listed as George Wheelock, born in the U.S. on 17 May 1829, carpenter by trade, Methodist by religion. His wife, Harriet, was born 12 Feb 1850 in Quebec. Their son, Ralph C., was born 18 Jan 1884, in Quebec. George Wheelock, head of household, was born 28 Feb 1873 in Quebec, Methodist, farmer. His wife, Silome, was born 3 Oct 1881 in Quebec, Roman Catholic.6

He was still in Potton in 1911, listed in the census as "Don Wheelock," born May 1828 (sic), living with his wife, Harriet, and his son, Ralph C. His year of immigration is listed as 1861.7

According to funeral records, he was buried on 9 Dec 1917.8 He is buried with his wife in Jones Cemetery, Vale Perkins, Estrie Region, Quebec, Canada (not far from Potton).

Research Notes:

The key evidence tying the Carlos in Canada to the son of Perez and Elizabeth is (1) his name, which is unusual within the Wheelock families of America, (2) his disappearance from Vermont, and subsequent appearance in Canada in a timeframe consistent with his Civil War records, and the divorce of his first wife, (3) the date of birth given in the 1901 census, which matches exactly with the date given in the Vermont vital records, and (4) the alignment with the family story as told in "The Wheelock Family of Calais".

There are some inconsistencies, however. He appears under at least three different names in the Canadian census records: Carlos, George, and Don. His headstone has D. C. Wheelock on it, initials presumably for Don Carlos. He probably went by that name. The name George is probably a mistake, confused with his son, who was the head of the household where Carlos lived in 1901.

His headstone has his birthdate of 1845 carved on it. This is about 16 years off from his actual birth date of 1829. His wife's headstone is nearby, clearly identifying her as Harriet Gardner, wife of D. C. Wheelock. His son, Ralph C. Wheelock is buried in the same cemetery, so it is unlikely this is not the Carlos Wheelock in the census records. The census records all have reasonable ages for Carlos; so in all likelihood, the 1845 date is an error.

Joanna Wheelock

Birth: 25 Nov 1748, Leominster, Worcester, MA

Baptism: 17 May 1749, Leominster, Worcester, MA

Death: 13 Jun 1803

Burial: Pine Grove Cemetery, Leominster, Worcester Co, MA

Father: Jonathan Wheelock
Mother: Elizabeth Russell

Spouse: Ephraim Carter
Marriage: 2 Apr 1770, Leominster, Worcester, MA

Notes:

Weis shows two daughters named Joanna in the family of Jonathan Wheelock and Elizabeth Russell. The first born 16 Nov 1740 in Lancaster (Leominster VRs), died young (no death record found). The second born 25 Nov 1748, in Leominster; baptized 17 May 1749, Leominster, married Ephraim Carter. No source was cited for the birth or baptism of the second Joanna, nor have any confirming vital records been found, but the 1748 date agrees with the age on her headstone.1 Carlyle Capron Wheelock also shows two daughters named Joanna in this family.

The DAR gives her birth date as 1749, closer to the date given by Weis.2

Lysander Wheelock

Birth: 17 Jul 1815, Sherborn, MA

Death: 1 Apr 1879, Natick, MA

Spouse: Hannah Horton
Marriage: 10 Jan 1836

Notes:

Hannah Horton's family was from Natick and Sherborn, MA. Lysander and Hannah resided at Greenwhich, NY.1

Lysander's 1879 Natick death record (311:131) indicates that he was the son of Reuben Lamb and Patience Holland Albertson. Several children of Reuben and Patience were baptised in Holliston on 30 Nov 1819, including Ezekiel Lysander Bascom Lamb (Holliston VRs). "Massachusetts Name Changes 1780 - 1982" indicates that Ezekiel Lysander Bascom Lamb of Framingham (next to Natick) changed his name to Lysander Wheelock on 29 Mar 1834. His connection to the Wheelock family, and the reasons for changing his name are not given.
